Didn’t want to start tearing into the squareback, so I HAD to get another to do a full project on. This is all very addictive! So far the tear down has gone smoothly. Pans are toast and a few rust spots on the body. Looking forward to learning a bunch along the way.

Yup. It does look fairly straight though. Wink

The rabbit hole just gets deeper and usually deeper than you think but it's all worth it in the long run. I'm doing a pan off restore on a 69 auto square right now. A pan off is really not that bad you can get to everything a lot easier.

Yup, and it allows you to get to everything, even stuff you didn't plan on. Wink I've done a couple over the years, and really it's the only way to go.

Most of the tear down is complete. I’ve bagged and labeled all the misc bolts and screws and took lots of reference pics. Like you guys said, I’ve found more rust than expected, but I’m pushing forward. Now I need to build a cart for the body and get it off.

My question is this. After I get all the screws and bolts off what is left to disconnect. I got the steering coupler disconnected since I didn’t pull the column off yet. The brake lines are disconnected in the front. No engine dipstick. Anything I’m missing?

Thanks,
Leo

Looks not that bad in the pictures.

If everything is loose, all that is left are the pan bolts and also 2 front and 2 rear around the suspension

in the front, under the gas tank next at shock absorber position
in the back, just behind the cross, next to the wheel wells

Whoo! Brings back some memories!

Make sure to take out the shifter - it seems to hang things up.

You go brother.

Thanks Andy! I’ve gotta work this weekend, but I’m hoping to tackle the removal next week!

I’ll double check that, thanks! The engine was out when I got it. I’ve got it sitting in the garage at the moment.

Speedometer cable? Brake rez hoses? Brake light switches?

Here's where ALL of the pan bolts are.

Thanks Bob! I’ve got all that disconnected. I think I’m ready to go. I actually copied that pic from another time you posted it. Can I ask what book that diagram comes from?

It's out of the big Blue Bentley manual.

How do you guys accomplish drilling out tight spot welds? I’m trying to remove the cross brace/kick plate and cant seem to figure out how to make it happen. It’s such a tight area and I can’t get the drill in the right spot? Any tips

Thanks,
Leo

Just weld in 1.5" repair pieces along the bottoms.
Not really necessary to gouge up the tunnel & heater channels for a complete kick panel replacement, if you even have skills to duplicate it?

maybe from the backside, and if it's a really hard to reach spot, i just take the little multi tool and cut away around the spot weld or grind away the spot weld with a dremel grinder

Yup, this is one of those areas that unless your OCD won't let go, it doesn't have to be perfect. Maybe even sacrifice a small part to keep the larger part whole. It really depends on how visible that spot is.
