Two questions..

Can the rearmost oil pressure relief valve cover plug be removed without draining the oil?

Is it OK to use sealant on that plug? The previous builder had used blue sealant. The manual says not to use sealant, so I just used a new crush washer when I rebuilt the engine. It weeps. Tightening it hasn't helped.

Yes you can remove the plug without losing/draining oil...

Sealant should not be needed as there is a "compression" (crush) gasket between the "plug" and case...

A little oil will seep out, not bad.

A new crush washer "should" be enough to prevent leakage there. But I cannot say that a little RTV there wouldn't help sometimes.

Are you using the dummm, stooopid stock slotted plug or an aftermarket hex plug or allen-head plug???

Thanks both.

I've been using the original one with the slot that's too big to get a screwdriver in, so you can't easily tighten it. I didn't know that anyone made a replacement. I'll have a look. Any recommendations?

For the stock slotted screws that are somewhat stripped you can purchase a socket that has the wider fitting to remove (I don't remember the name offhand you will have to search for it), or you can take a long screwdriver and angle it to one of the edges of the screw and tap it with a hammer until it loosens up.

Thanks. Found them for sale over here as 'type 3' plugs, but they say they fit type 1 engines too.

Cheers

The allen plug will likely solve the issue as you can torque it more effectively but a smear of RTV wouldn't be the end of the world.

If you do struggle, search for lambda bung, or plug. Same m18x1.5 IIRC

I've had to have the seating surface of the case were the metal O ring compresses against spot faced on the last couple of rebuilds due to corrosion.
