I expected a Tee fitting for the radiator feed hose to replicate the newer factory design. |
No offense, but why? The tower kit clearly shows the included T-fitting and 5/8 hose:
https://www.vancafe.com/KT-1982104-p/kt-1982104.htm .
Then, there's this paragraph:
Vans originally equipped with the 251121104D hose, which attaches the coolant tower to the coolant pipe going to the radiator and has a small diameter hose branch off to the transmission cooler, will not use the included tee and hose clamps.
https://www.vancafe.com/251121104D-p/251121104d.htm (which is $38, not $89; silicone version is $55)
I'm sure VC would've included the 104D hose instead had you inquired within. But, to be fair, VC should be giving buyers the option to choose this original hose in a drop-down menu on the A/T tower page. _________________ ~Kamz

Kam, I totally accept it was my misunderstanding/assumption.
Not at all down on RMW, the tower is exactly what they portray.
In my misunderstanding I was surprised to see the redirected auto trans coolant flow pattern robbing the heater core of its full flow.
The front heater core already struggles sharing its flow with the rear heater core.
I see reduced heat output if you plumb it as they indicate. A wide open rear heater core by itself robs the front core of heat, and you can turn that off.
This flow detour?..... Always on once the thermostat opens allowing flow through the cooler.
Point is, I'm doing it differently.
The actual metal tower Tee is a work of beauty.
Price of hose, depends on where you buy it .....

The water pump pushes coolant through the 2 hot heads and into coolant junction tower. Some of that hot coolant is pushed into the small hose to the tranny "cooler".
How could it flow any other way? Explain please.

I am completely baffled by the auto trans cooler flow!
...
Logic tells me that hot water on its way to the radiator gets diverted to the auto trans cooler following the distribution tower port or entering via the inline Tee.
I cannot imagine that coolant distributor tower would be accepting incoming fluids from a small pipe while all of the other small pipes (heater and bleeder ring) are pushing hot coolant out.
After the auto trans cooler the coolant reenters the main circulation via the large return hose to the upper thermostat housing. |
Bumping back up to say that the factory indicated the flow of the A/T "cooler" back in 1986 and confirms the above:

Previous illustration showing the reverse flow direction has been removed from prior posts. _________________ ~Kamz
