Bought this 63 OG Rag sight unseen from California, no accidents, no rust, never restored.
My plan is to separate the body from the pan, then clean and restore the bottom half . Strip the pan, blast it & por15 it. Then new brake lines & upgrade to 4 wheel disc brakes.
The engine is a perf build and only needs a clean up on the engine, torque studs, replace any hardened pushrod tube seals, etc.
The body has been resprayed once before and looks like its been driven through corn fields, but is straight and solid with the exception of a couple dings. I need to figure out how soon and how high end I want to pursue the finish.
Stay tuned for updates when the car arrives in Florida next week

Well, it came in a bit rougher than expected, and sadly I was cut off causing a bit of front end damage to the car...
An X5 crossed left to right in front of me (his fault) causing me to hit right at his passenger rear wheel and quarter.
The whole noise got pushed back and to the right, curling up and distorting the passenger front quarter.
It was insured and they gave me 3 options: have it fixed, total it, total it and buy it back with a salvage title.
I negotiated a 4th option to where I act as my own body shop at a slightly reduced rate, they pay me to fix the car and I keep it with a clean title.

It does suck, and thanks for the concern. I got a bit jarred, but I'll be OK.
I've been keeping myself busy tearing it down.
The spare isn't going to budge for now so the tank didn't want to come out either.
What came first, the chicken or the egg...
was this hole clogged, causing water to collect and rust or did it rust, thus obstructing the hole
It cleaned up easily with a wire brush
other side is pristine
I finally have the body ready for separation. Only one of the body bolts broke during the whole process. many turned freely by hand once loosened up.
Separate
I used a chain hoist on a pair of 2x4s spreading the weight out. Way nose heavy with spare and left fender still on. view from below
Once the pan was out, i used a scraper to get the tarboard off. Fortunately it was unseasonably cool down here in Fort Lauderdale... it came right off.
No surprises in the pan, the battery tray still has some thickness even though it has lost some, for sure...
For the life of me, I could not get the last engine bolt behind cyl #3
I had to grind those nubs down in order to get it off
Determined the clutch arm had gotten pretty thin and needs replacement
The piece de resistance was back here:
Thoughts? did they think they were going to mount speakers back there??
I mean seriously...
Anyhow, next step is to scrape all of the undercoating off of it and then the pan goes off to media blasting and the body gets worked. |
