|

The past two days I've gotten a substantial leak of Swepco 202 from the area where the CV joins to the transmission. It looks like it is coming from behind the flange the CV bolts to. The CV is basically dry. My guess is axle seal, but it sure came on fast.
Opinions?

The last one I had leaking like that, the new O ring that seals the bearing housing had snapped. I'd plan on doing the seal, but maybe have the O ring on hand assuming you have a way to spin the seal cover out.
Also, I'll check to see the thread with the seal save for the CV flange, might as well have one of those on hand too.

edit: You will need the flange cap that goes on top of the circlip that holds the flange to the shaft. _________________ ☮️ |

cold weather brought it on... if you only want to do it once, add a SpeediSleeve to the flange. _________________ -dan

Wonder if the vent hole clogged up causing a pressure buildup that pushed the seal out? |

I’m sorry!
I did it last week when I was there.
It seemed like you needed a project.

Possible. I’ll check. But this happened after a short drive both days. Not enough to get the trans temp up at all.
And we drove 2600 miles to Key West and back a month ago with no leaks. |
I have had seals that suddenly ripped apart due to excessive wear. Hard to fathom that they weren't even seeping before hand. |

I agree. The other side has a small amount of dirt adhered to it from a seep so minor I'd consider it normal. This side just let loose without warning.
I drove back from San Diego to MD in October and Key West in Nov and nothing. I guess I am glad it happened when I got home! _________________ Dave O

To really know you’ll need to pull the cv flanges and the plastic retainers. It’s either the lip seals or the o rings. I’d be doing both if you don’t know the age of the cover O rings. Fairly straightforward if you have a tool for spinning the collars out. Do one side at a time and if you remove the collar, center punch reference marks and measure the depth. You can also count the revolutions.
I’d expect to see more residue on the cv flanges from CG force if it were the lip seals, but they could be weeping just enough to run down behind the plastic retainers. _________________ ☮️ |

Clean up the old grease and pries out the cap hidden under it, take those duck nosed snap ring pliers you bought and remove the snap ring making sure it doesn't fly around the room and pull the flange off the shaft.
You will need to remove the plastic lock ring to access the seal, the seal can be removed with a seal pulling tool. As mentioned don't turn the adjusting nuts unless you have punch marked their position. |

I bet it’s the o-rings. Thought mine was the flange seal and replaced but still seeps. Talked to very knowledgeable tranny builder and he said it’s more common for the o-ring to leak than the flange seal. |

Plan on replacing the o-ring. There is also a seal that covers the clip ring that is usually siliconed into place. The housing that the o-ring seals is how the pre-load is set on the differential, pay attention to its clocking. Otherwise it is a pretty easy job and highly satisfying to stop that particular leak
