I just bought one, a Honda Element '03 AWD for super cheap. Anyone else supplement their Van with a back up? My situation may be unique because I have no way to get around if the van has an issue. Coolant level light flashing but just need to get groceries? F that, no more risking damage or being stupid. $1,600 back up and only $15 more per month insurance.

Sweet! I don't know if that model Vespa retained the old versions oddest clutch gear change system left hand dance I ever encountered.

I daily mine in the winter so I needed both a back up in case it breaks and a back up in case there is too much snow for it. I elected to use my ATV as a back up (it has tracks). I choose not to drive my other cars in the winter. |

Vanagon not a daily. I take too many quick trips and need more reliability and comfort. We use the Vanagon for camping and snow trips mainly, or hauling large items =) |

Does anyone actually only own a Vanagon? I think that's a simpler question.
I would assume that anyone that owns a Vanagon also owns at least 1 other car and I'd go with the Vanagon being the 3rd car for most people. _________________ '87 Syncro

That's thing for me at least, my Vanagon is my only "car" and if it takes a nose dive or complains, I'd be forced to get the big VW out of static mode in an RV park, no small feat.

I will give my 1991 some credit. It has only failed 3 times in 3 years and they were all silly coolant leaks from subpar replacement parts. Outside of that its a Honda!

I think I drive my '50 chebbie truck more than my Vanagon. Both are equally loved.

1986 VW Cabriolet
2016 VW Golf GTI
The GTI is the daily driver. The Cabriolet is the fun-in-the-sunner (long time retired daily). The Vanagon is the road tripper. _________________ ~Kamz

I have my old grampa’s ’78 diesel Rabbit I’m fixing up, it runs! (3 year old photo, yes that was mold and lichen on the outside!) It didn’t run for 30 years when this picture was taken, but I got it fixed up and barely roadworthy. A summer project. _________________ Vanagon ’83 diesel AAZ w/Giles injection, 5spd 4.57R&P+TBD and a '78 diesel Rabbit

I bought an old F100 in 1995. Although it was not as much fun to drive, it was easier to procure parts for the F100 than the Vanagon in my obscure part of the country. The Vanagon ceased being a daily at that time. I still have both, and have added more Vanagons and F series trucks to my fleet. I use the trucks all the time, and the Vanagons for fun now. _________________ 1969 Deluxe, owned since 1973

Hmm... My Westy being my daily, I do have alternatives.
Not that my Westy Vanagon is my only Vanagon, as there are actually 3 others hanging around in various states of function.
However, yes, 2 Highlanders, a Tundra, a F250, and a Malibu. All running/workhorsing. And that's not counting my kids daily drivers.
Then there's the air cooled stuff. Which, with a little coaxing, could get me to town, at need. _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |
