This has probably been covered but I will do again for fun.
My washer pump broke.
I had epoxied it back on and it worked for a time until I had to disturb it and it broke off again.
I knew this was coming. Luckily, not too long ago, I grabbed another pump from some VW from a junk yard for a whole $1. Shipping a proper one out here would be both expensive and take a long time. The other issue is I am not sure how good aftermarket ones are.
Here is the VW one.
This pump is found on BMWs, Audis, Porches, and VWs from about 1999-2019. Also available from aftermarket suppliers for $5 or so. (It may be found on some domestics as well according to rock auto)
This is the problem:
The connectors are different. Luckily, there is a way to get around that without having to splice or cut. Just shove the old connector in. The colour code of the one wire even matches so you don't put it in backwards.
To connect up the fluid line I used a short piece of silicon hose I had lying around. The lines in the van are too old and stiff to fit over the nipple. The silicon line fits over the nipple and then over the existing hose. No leaks.
It works fine. Only issue is that it's powerful, almost too powerful. If I was outside the jets would have probably cleared the van and landed behind, in my case it only hit the ceiling of the garage. I reaimed the nozzles and should work on the highway nicely.
Next time you are at a junk yard think about it. Bonus points if you also nab some Suzuki 3 jet nozzles. It's what I am currently using. |

Nice fix.
For years I drove by a VW recycler (Absolute German) on West Marginal Way in Seattle twice a day that I could browse for Vanagon parts. 10-15 years ago they moved down the street and it's been awhile since they've had a Vanagon. Now it's a relatively small and dense recycling business surrounded by steel walls churning late model German cars.
I just checked and they don't even list a Vanagon in their parts alert settings. _________________ - Jim

Thanks. My replacement barely fills my three head sprayers. I’m excited that you found a more powerful version. Thanks for contributing to Vanagon science. _________________ VW LT40 build. Like a Vanagon but 30% larger in every direction and 40% slower even in metric.
