This thread covers the journey Torgny Sommelius a travel journalist who worked for the Helsingborg Dagblag daily newspaper in Sweden in the 1950's early 60's until him death in 1963. The trip was made from Helsingborg Sweden to Ceylon, (and many other countries)and back again.
He left HellsingBorg 1st March 1955 and returned 19th December 1956 covering 65,250Km
History continued when the bus was rescued and eventually put back on the road in 2010-2018 in the uk.
it is now is being restored by Mark Spicer of Type 29 Ltd in the Uk.
The newer red and brown paint which was painted in the 1960's has been removed back to the original White and the new panels blended in.
I've owned the bus for 7 years. its been away with Mark Spice since 2018.
it is being rebuilt as close to how Torgny had it and going back to stock height..
Theres no order of pics...... |

Those photos are absolutely remarkable. Very neat how you know the history of it so well. That must've been a great trip in those days.

If you have Paint on your computer, you can just save a copy of each photo and resize it. If they're small enough to fit on your monitor, they should be uploadable. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

What an awesome history on the bus. There are so many adventures that our buses went on which nobody documented, and are totally lost to time. That this epic was found and is now known with the bus is truly amazing. Thanks for sharing, and keep it coming. _________________ .

Email them all to me if you want and I'll send them back in an easier size to upload.
If they are huge (guessing they are) make sure to break it up into multiple emails because otherwise your email might choke on sending them too. Email places like Yahoo and Google often have a max email size you can send at once. _________________ How to Post Photos

I bought it in 2013. I was at the Barndoor campout out at Lydden Hill race circuit Kent. I was camping in my 58' Panel (which I still have)and had been watching an advert for a 1954 Barndoor bus for a few weeks on The split screen van club. The price was getting lower and lower every week.i said to my Wife Tracy ‘’I wanna buy this.’’…. I was getting very excited especially as being with 17 other Barndoors!!
After a few beers, I contacted the owner Simon James and I bought it blind, before I knew it I had sent a deposit.
The deal was done. |
I remember this. You came over to our stall and started telling me how you wanted to buy a Barndoor. I’ll be honest, I thought you might just be “in the moment” and talking the talk so I gave you Si’s number and told you to go and ring him and that you wouldn’t find a cheaper Barndoor on the market. I’ll admit to being quite surprised when you came back later that day and said you’d bought it. Shame Si got out the game, but nice to see this bus being resurrected properly at last. A real pity that funky aftermarket sliding sunroof got binned; I remember you swapping out the whole roof a few years back and wishing you’d rebuilt it instead; but at least you’ve got a hole going back in even if it’s factory style. Gonna be a cool recreation of Torgny’s bus. Now you need to re-drive the route!!! |

Really amazing history lesson here with an old bus. Being able to see the past life pics of a vehicle that you own like these has to feel absolutely bonkers. Treating it with the respect you are and going the distance like this deserves credit. It’s a lot of work.
keep going!! _________________ www.blastserv.com
