Thought my fellow SC and OG Paint Enthusiasts might get a kick out of my most recent rescue mission. My daughter found this SC while we were on a rock climbing trip two years ago and I was finally able to buy it after two years of trying! As you can see someone got creative back in the day and removed the passenger side treasure chest door as well as part of the front load bed and gates to accommodate a homemade camper.

Thanks Fritz! The crazy part is it had sat in the backyard of a house in Spearfish SD for years and they get lots of snow up there! The truck hasn’t been on the road for years a girl in her 30’s had bought it with her father who passed away years ago and had no idea where to go from here so she has entrusted me with the preservation! The best part is I believe it’s an OG 33k Mile truck the way the doors open and close and the condition underneath but I can’t document that...would love to hear some opinions...

Beautiful Truck. Cant wait to see the buffing pics. Dude that thing is insanely solid.

It could be low mileage. The better indicator would be items that wear with use like steering box and front suspension components. other things like og style hose clamps, hoses, belts would be mostly untouched with only 33k on it. Congrats on finding a Killer OG paint and OG paint rig.

Pretty sure it was not a homemade camper setup. Have seen a few trucks modified the same way and one with the top intact for sale in the classifieds here.

My mechanic thinks it’s OG mileage...here’s a pic of the OG motor that we pulled it has a new motor and brakes now and is a super tight driver, better than my 71’ Westy! Here’s a few pics after buffing

Nice find. Looks really dry and the original paint should clean up with some patina

On the 33K I'd say it should still have the original shocks and tie rod ends with grease fittings.

The tie rods might be hard to tell but the shocks would be VW-stamped.
I agree with the other person that the steering should probably be really tight but I've had a couple low mileage cars where random things were replaced anyway. 40K mile car with a wrong front wheel cylinder and one replaced tie rod, 50K mile Bus with a worn out drag link (but it was original).

Original engine is a good sign too.

Thanks Everett, I will check out the shocks and tie rods when I get her back from the welder, the steering is super tight and she is a joy to drive whether or not the miles are OG..but it would be way cool if they are OG Miles!

Congrats! That truck is sweet.

Here is a really cool low mileage SC camper conversion, yours looks like it was probably similar:

Thanks that’s a cool truck, I just wish they would’ve kept my OG gates somewhere when they did the camper build on mine...
