I did some searching, and really couldn’t find what I was looking for. If I was to look for an OEM replacement steering wheel for a 67 Beetle, what years fit? What years would be correct? I’ve read where the 65, and earlier wheels were white, and had notches in the lower area of the horn ring where the 66-later ones were black without the notches. I’ve read references where the 66/67 wheels are unique, and some that say the 66-71 wheels are the same. The most common part number reference I’m seeing is #311415651A. Is that correct, or will fit? |

All depends on what color you want.. From 1964 - 1970 the Deluxe wheel itself is the same mold without the horn ring relief notches.
Colors and horn button/ring style are different but interchangeable.
(Deluxe 1966, Deluxe and Standard 1967-1970)
64 - 65 horn bar, no ring and are Silver Beige
66 - 70 horn ring, and are Black
311415651A =1964-65 Steering wheel
311415651B =1966-70 Steering wheel
Part number change is only for the color change and both are interchangeable

Excellent!
I must not have dug far enough into the older posts. That link cleared up a lot of things.
So if the wheel is being restored/painted, I’ll start searching for a 64-70 that can be used as a correct replacement for 67. The link had 71 being unique, maybe the splines on the column were different.
Thanks |

From WW link within the other Samba link
1971 Beetle, Standard and Super Beetle Aesthetically the wheel remains the same as the previous version, however the mounting hub is changed slightly to fit inside of a new steering column.
FYI.. high end repros are available https://kochs.com/

I always thought Kochs just restored wheels, but I came across their listings of new wheels they are manufacturing last night. With what people are asking for og 64-70 wheels, and the cost of primer/paint for a diy resto, they are more economical than most think. There may be some custom work added, so modifying an og wheel may be the better route. Thanks |
