|
|
EDIT: Material list is on page 13
NOTE: While this thread deals specifically with an early 1990 Tintop with VW rear A/C the general principles apply to all of the "newer" Vans with rear A/C and the controls in the Left Rear "D" Pillar.
****************
As you probably know by now, I now have a 1990 Tintop.
I will be going through the Air Conditioning system much as I did on my 86.
The differences between the 86 (basically the 1.9 A/C with some newer 2.1 bits thrown in just to confuse you) and the newer system is huge.
I'll figure it out, I'll fix my system but to start off the controls in the left D pillar are compromised.
There was a fire in there. The padding behind the wires is significantly burned.
There are three spliced wires with electrical tape, Upper left of photo near screw bracket, that have been taped together.
I wonder ..... Was something removed from there or was it simply a burned wired repair?
Also the harness running vertically is completely wrapped in electrical tape!

i've got an 89 Carat donor that i can pull the panel off and take photos.... after things warm up. but there's probably images in the archives.
as i'm sure you'll do, i'd unwrap any non-factory tape to see what's going on, put in proper splices, and of course clean out the old foam. holler if you need any plastic trim, i might hang onto the wiring and controls for a while tho. _________________ -dan

I have a 91 Tintop and I'm about 40 miles away. If you want I can do a road trip for a side by side comparison. I'm here for another week yet till we head to SWFL for the winter. |

Your "new" van is also missing a relay.

Dave~
I recently bought parts from a guy parting a syncro that got cleaned up real bad on some ice.
anyway, it has the a/c in tact and the guy isn't a 'moon and stars' seller, meaning that he is super reasonable in the price department.
it took me 5 mins to buy stuff, and 2 hours of chatting. again, super nice guy. i can put you in touch...he doesn't want to scrap the hulk because he wants to make sure everything useable is parted.
shoot me a p/m and i'll put you in touch. he's in CT and willing to ship _________________

Hi Dave, What usually happens is the large red 12v wire connector at the fuse link overheats. The problem is the brass eye connector is too small for the amp loads. In Europe they must not run the A/C as often as we do. I have seen this connector melt the fuse and relay plates and burn all the nearby components.
The solution is to go to NAPA and get some brass battery connectors for a garden tractor. Change out that 12+ wire end to a bigger connector and change the fuse link, as I have done in the picture. Use solder too. Do the same on the other end of that red wire. It connects to the back of the alternator, AIRC.
Check the two fuses for the brown grounds. They can get toasty too. The solution there is to be sure the fuses/connectors are clean and fresh. The 6mm ground stud is clean too.
Having another late model Vanagon to mirror your repairs is very handy. _________________ 'Let's Go Brandon' |

Agreed that the wiring terminal is sub optimal. Also consider replacing the fusible link with a maxi fuse holder. _________________ 1990 Orly Blue Carat |

Thanks for posting this, I hadn't heard of the upgraded relays before. Where did you source them? Not having much luck with the part numbers at the usual vendors.
Found a $50 OEM 431-951-253F here:
https://www.europaparts.com/relay-431951253f.html
It also looks like 8D0-951-253 may have been superseded by 4H0-951-253 which is available in a 70 amp version.
https://www.europaparts.com/relay-443951253j.html
VanCafe sells the complete board with a new 70amp relay (even thought the pic shows a 40amp), but they don't sell just the relay.
https://www.vancafe.com/KT-9984104-p/kt-9984104.htm
I run the AC a ton in Houston and want to upgrade every component I can in the system. Abel told me several years ago RMW was working on a plug and play AC Wiring upgrade kit, but I never saw them come out with one. Would be happy to support such an effort. _________________ Driving a 90 Carat since 2014

What's in the photo are the original relays; I failed to photograph the replacements along with the maxi fuse I installed.
The 431951253F (Compressor Clutch 20amp ) relay was bought at NAPA (albeit 5 years ago); even aftermarket, it's a red relay:
The 8D0951253 (Blower Fan ) relay... can't recall where I bought it, but it is available. The OEM relay is stamped 370:
NAPA lists a Meyle version: https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/ATM8D0951253 . _________________ ~Kamz

I'm thinking the Nostalgic Air r134a unit we've been putting in older Vans. Just under $100 but modifications needed.
https://nostalgicac.com/
This isn't a big issue for all new hoses will be installed for the EZ Clip system.

if you pick a Nostalgic Air, please post the PN! i'll probably do a good 134a conversion with new hoses on this 89 Westy. my rat-rod 87, well that's all gone (and 'Lovin' every minute of it!' - Kramer) _________________ -dan
