I've looked on eBay, jBugs, and ISP, but I can't find an ashtray handle replacement anywhere. I have an imported '64 Variant.

Any help would be appreciated.

These are really hard to find and there are no reproductions for the early version and later (pictured above). There's a guy who goes by project_therapy who made a decent repro but he only made a handful. Not sure if he has any left or is making them again. You could grab a '66-67 chrome handle and paint it. They are the same, only metal and more durable.

Yeah that's him, glad he made an ad. He made some black with white dot that were pretty cool.

The metal and plastic ones have different hole spacing. Plastic ones are maybe 4 or 5mm wider holes. The metal handle area will only just cover the holes on the ashtray front originally meant for a plastic handle.

“64–‘67 are basically the same. The only difference they were metallic in ‘66 and ‘67x

Early early ones had a slight difference in the attachment but were the same size. Don’t know much about late ones, but I have a few NOS ashtray inserts and they only have one screw hole and it is offset to the side.

Don't discard your crusty chrome ashtray handles. They come back to life. This one is the same one from the above pics after a mild polish.

I went to the chrome handle on my 65, as I wanted to add a little bling to it. Same with the vent knobs/handles. I bought them from someone in the Samba classifieds years ago. Wink

Checked the parts book and it looks like you are correct. '66 only for metal pull tab.

I recently wanted a new ash tray front in order to keep my original as an original colour swatch.
This is the one from my Australian built 66.

So the only ashtray I could find was one with a plastic knob. It was crusty and the knob was cracked but that didn't matter cause all I wanted was the metal front plate. But when I put my chrome metal knob on it the holes in the front were wider by about 5mm. The metal knob just barely covered the holes. I checked the width of the holes in the plastic knob compared to the metal knob and they were wider by the same amount.
So either nobody has actually pulled out a vernier and measured them or my plastic knobbed ashtray is extremely early model or im seeing a wacky difference in an Australian built type 3's.
In the end I welded up the holes and re-drilled them.

Yup! You got the early plastic ashtray knob. That's Uber early.

So the early car purists will hate you for ever for destroying an earl ashtray face plate! HA HA HA! Hey, your car, your parts. But yes, it was an early ashtray panel.
