Years ago i replaced the tank on my 64 with an aftermarket one. Small "Kombi" cap. (I know....) I want to put back a large filler neck version but are they really all the same?
- Fit. Pretty sure they are all the same
- Filler neck. Pretty sure the same
- Bottom stamping. Did this change?
- top stamping. Did this change?
- Vent exit location. Pretty sure all the same.
I ask because in searching i have seen two different top stampings. One with equal pressed in ribs across the top and one with the left side stamping different.
What would a 64 European Delivery have had?
Images lifted from For sale adds. Happy to remove if asked. |

IMO. the top is original the bottom is a replacement.
The one with the right rear corner at an angle is simply the later tank top (for right quarter panel filler location) with the older tank neck.
I remember at one time these were the replacement tanks once the original supply was exhausted.
Keep in mind that top tank style was in production through 1967 model years. Once the 68s were produced, VW had no need to keep pressing the old style. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

Did some more research and Volkswagnut is correct. The top one is original an the bottom a factory replacement. FWIW the tank that WW sells is the factory replacement.
Thank you. Off to find a new tank. |

I have one in my '63. Looks good, fits well, and uses the OEM cap too. _________________ '63 Ragtop (current)
