Does anyone know what size pin or have a part number for the pin that goes into the emergency brake to hold the handle shaft and the upright arm together? I have a Bentley and it named the part but not a part number. I looked up the part without any luck. TIA

almost every product sold that was designed to be serviced has parts manuals and fiches that show parts. Learn how to use them if you will be owning a 50 year old VW bus. There are different parts for different years so not every year uses the same part, although I suspect that part is common between years. Here are some links to such sites online. The part you probably want is on fiche page 58 and is likely part #20 which is N 013 239 1. You also need part number 21 to hold it. Next, if a part number is not in the fiche it is because VW discontinued it a long time ago. They remove numbers when the part is discontinued, so sometimes you have to look at older models to see if they show the part when earlier copies of the parts manuals were printed. Last, learn who the folks are who sell good quality used parts. Many times you can give them a description of the part and they can get it for you. I like using classified here on the Samba, Ken Madsen at TheBusco, Chris at BustedBus, Avery's Air Cooled, and Interstate VW parts in Lake Elsinore CA.

Robbie - that may be the one that the bracket lever swivels on instead of the pull rod to bracket lever. Part number #10. I think he wants item #20.

Why is it that so many bus owners asking about parts here fail to even mention what model year they have?
Are they under the impression that all busses and parts were the same?
It seems the part in question is #N 13 239 1 for 68-71 bus, held in place with cotter pin and washer, and
#N 23 500 1 for '72 (and later?) bus, held in place with 6 mm "safety clip" #N 23 624 1.

I’m sorry I failed to add that my bus is a 74’ and that I wasn’t aware of this fiche parts list. The part I was googling is called a ratchet rod pin not the lower pin held in by two e-clips. Thanks for the feedback and help. I’ll be sure to do more searching before I ask for help next time.

It isn't that we are mean and demand you do more searching. It is trying to give owners the tools to be successful with their bus. 40 years ago they could walk into a dealer and order the part. Today, a lot of times it is often whether you can be successful finding a specific part - or a picture of how it is supposed to be put together. Same for a repair. Most of us find that we often spend more time trying to find a GOOD part than doing the actual repair - especially when we are just starting out.

The early and late parts are very similar. Probably a hardware store 5/16 clevis pin, perhaps
modified a bit, would work in all.

| Lots of foreign made tractors are sold in this country and I would bet more than one of them uses a pin that would work here. A local place that sells and/or repairs farm equipment might be able to help you out. |
