Another hard to find item. Thought i’d ask for opinions before I do too much research. Anybody found one that can be used on the stock housings? Luckily when time comes to run this engine I can use this one... but to replace down the road. The one pictured is a direct stock replacement that was purchased in the ‘80’s.

Not just hard to find. Unobtanium....except for NOS....which is rare. I will post my part number list for about 6-8 brands.

All quit producing them around 1999. One thing i have been threatening to do.....is to make a quick cheap cast/mold for the two rubber end caps.....which are plastisol.....yes....same material as Tee shirt ink.....and just casting caps to use with filter strips. I could cut ip a strip of my golf mk 6 filter and it would work perfectly.

So here is the list of air filter part numbers I had for late model 1973 D-jet that used the paper element:

Size/dimensions:

Inches [ MM ]

O.D.: 8.06 [205mm]
Height: 3.22 [82mm]
I.D.: 4.94 [125mm]

Parts #'s

VW part #: 022-129-620
Bosch Old: 73349
Bosch New: AF232
Purolater: AF117
Fram: CA2675
Mann: C2180

Wild card: I had a part number for K&N that looked like its measurements fit; E-3380

These will fit:
https://www.knfilters.com/e-3380-round-air-filter look at the specs.

Just for those also looking:

Mann C2180 to 8 73 (round for 1.7L D-Jet 73 412 and 914)

Mann C 2290 for 1974 (square for 1.8L L-Jet 412 and 914)

Other problems....when looking for NOS....using the new Bosch # of AF232 will get you something that does not fit. There are 45 cross matches for AF232 in other brands....that are actually a Bosch 73365...which is a Honda Prelude filter

All of that being said...here is an NOS Mann C2180 on Fleabay ...a bit pricey at $35....but its the right one ! Wink

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mann-Air-Filter-C-2180-Vw-412-Porsche-914-4-/202924637649

Ha!...I just found that Fram lists their part #.... these fit the Fiat 124 (1.2 liter) 1966 model and the Toyota Corolla 1968/69 1.1L and the corolla 1969 to 1979 with 1.2L and The Toyota Starlet 1983-84 with 1.3L.
BUT....the dimensions are slightly off. All of these filters had slightly different dimensions. The differences were usually in the rubber plate on each end.

A thread link to the K&N...but with a different part # (E-1000)

Here is the K&N E1000..it can fit too

More as I find it!

So I just came across a 914 1.7 air filter from AutoAtlanta. If it is the same filter that is used on my ‘73 1.7 that would be a good thing. The price is very reasonable. Anybody know for sure?
