I have been a gearhead since birth - mostly Mopars with a Ford or Chevy tossed in here and there, from beaters to the full-on rotisserie resto thing. But I just recently got bit by the Bug - bug. I was at VW car show and saw my first Volksrod. I thought to myself, "That is BAD ASS!" Of course I had to have one.
I found a 68 Bug that had a crushed roof due to a tree falling on it. I brought it home and commenced to my first chop top endeavor. Since all cars need a name, and due to the amount of body filler used to fix my welding imperfections, the 68 was christened "James Bondo V-007." I drew some door art using the VW script. I flipped the Volkswagen "L" to make the "7".

Because I can't sit still and finish one project before starting another, I decided to build a garage mate for James. I wanted to build a Volksrod truck so I started looking at other truck builds. I liked the idea of using the rear portion of a truck cab but didn't want to spend too much. And everyone around here thinks their rusted junk is worth at least $1000. Then I discovered the cab of my Dodge Ram had very similar body lines to the Beetle. Here:
and here:

And just like that project V-100 was born. I found this body
and found a wrecked Ram for $200 and the surgery commenced.

Parted most of the Ram out and made my money back +++. I still have plenty to do but I'm happy with my progress so far. Th Ram had vents in the rear section of the cab, which I wanted to keep. Luckily they were narrow enough that I was able to save them.
I cut out the rear cab corners
and transferred that to the V-100
Did the same for the roof corner too

Somewhere along the line I ended up mis-measuring or mis-cutting something, which put the driver side an inch shorter than the passenger side. This caused the back glass area to be all jacked up. So I cut out and rewelded two days worth of work. I got the sides within an 1/8 of an inch, which is good enough for me.

Nice work. Is the roof widened and stretched on the first bug? _________________ 1973 standard, yellow, lowered, 3” narrowed front, 1600 blo-thru turbo w/single dell 15.4@86, so far

The first bug has a Fernon's chop, so the roof is laid down, the a-pillars canted in, and a pie cut behind the two back windows. |
