My dilemma is I need to buy a set of JD2 model 3 bending dies for 1-1/2" tube. I can only afford 1 set of dies. I don't want to make a mistake and order the wrong set. they are available in 4.5" radius , 5.5"R, 6.5"R, 7.5"R which one should I buy for cage work on my buggy? Its a hydraulic bender so manual force is not an issue wall thickness will be .095 or .120 wall. My initial guess is 5.5"R
Thank you for your time. |

I don't remember if it was 3x or 4x the tube od. Speaking of buy once cry once , consider 180*dies instead of something less. _________________ My cut in half and rebuild thread

I was already planning to suck up to the 180 dies. Thank you cbeck for your response. |

This car was built with a JD32 bender with a 4.5"-1 1/2" die
The 5.5 may be a better choice but this is what I had to work with.

I have built a few roll cages using a 6.5” clr on my JD2. I’m happy with it, but a little tighter might be nice. _________________ Toyotas are so bumpy it makes me sick, literally.

Some place I remember it was recommended to use a radius 4.5 times the diameter of the tube.... So a 6.5 is pretty close.... Might have been at "Blind Chicken Racing"... IF radius is to big the bend takes up a lot of space....

SCCA, NASA, & FIA require that diameter of bends are at least 3x the tubing diameter. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I am using a JD Squared model32 and a 1-1/2in 5.5 radius 180 degree die.
It closely matches the radius of the aluminum windshield frame on a buggy and many buggy chassis’s roll cages. _________________ Joseph
