I’ve been keeping this one under wraps but today this showed up.
And here a little bit closer.
A 1962 German delivery coupe equipped with a Golde metal sunroof.
I was pretty surprised when I was contacted by the seller about this car. I always assumed that these were only installed in lowlights.
The installation was obviously done professionally, it looks factory even though we know these were never done by Karmann.
The car was pretty well accessorized when ordered:
Hella fog lights
Blaupunkt radio
Reverse light
VDO dash fan
Shoulder belt seat belts
Two tone front seats with cloth inserts
Car eventually ended up in Texas where the seller bought it in the late 1970s and brought it to Ohio where it was stored in doors with some bodywork started over the original Pearl White paint.
The body is very dry and straight other than the surface rust caused by grinding left unattended. Pans don’t look bad, though a bit thin in the back.
While in Texas AC was installed which eventually was removed prior to it being purchased, but the plumbing is still there.
No engine with the car.
I will restore this one to keep. It will be done as original except I am seriously thinking about installing a 1962 Porsche 356 industrial engine I’ve had laying around the garage for several years built to S-90 specs and having the trans built with appropriate gearing and wide five front disc brakes .
I’ve got a 73 and 70 convertible to finish first, but will likely chip away at this one in the meanwhile. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

A coupe with a sunroof! Nice! I missed this thread a few days ago. You've got a lot of work ahead of you!.... Lots of fun work.
I didn't realize German delivered Ghias would have towel bars like the US cars? Or were these fitted after it came to the US? _________________ Marc

I was wondering about that on Marc. I started another thread on Euro delivery vs US especially on post lowlights because I’m not seeing a lot of differences.
I’m pretty sure the bumpers have been on the car since new because it has vintage Hella fog lights that looked to be dealer installed and a back up light as well.
Also the rear apron has factory connections for the overriders.
The KPH speedo was replaced with a 10/63 US spec one so the car was in Europe for at least a year before it was brought to Texas. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

During this time period, US auto makers allowed anyone to custom order a car and they would come off the assembly line exactly as specified by the buyer. Does anyone know if this was possible with VW in Germany? If the original buyer knew that the car was eventually going to the US, they might have request the US style bumpers? _________________ Marc

Very nice! Could you show a picture of the sunroof parts? Did it crank backwards or tilt upwards in the back? Interesting to see those bumpers on a Euro-spec car. I got a pair of Bosch fog lights and a rear Bosch fog light with my car and I'm wondering how they were mounted to the car. Is is possible that if the car was ordered with fogs that it came with the US style bumpers just so it could use that towel bar to mount them? |

Mine also has the front Hella lights and a rear I think SWF light.
Did you see the pic of my bumpers? They show how the lights were mounted on the towel bar. The bracket is obviously designed for a Ghia it’s fits like a glove. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

I see that, that's what I'm wondering about. How did they mount them if they had the Euro style bumpers? Or, did they put those US style bumpers on just as a place to mount the fogs? My car didn't have the bumpers when I got it. I bought the Euro ones because it was a Euro spec car but now I'm wondering if it was possible it came with bumpers like your car has. |

Does you rear apron have the mounts for the over ride support tubes? It looks like it did in the pictures?
What do your foglights look like?
I looked at brochures and it looks like they always used the blade bumpers in Europe. So the plot thickens. Maybe your on to something with the bumpers special ordered. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

I see 2 options for the bumpers:
-car was ordered with these (they were available on german market.. my beetle originally delivered in Stuttgart had them as option)
-car was ordered with the tourist delivery program, and therefore already equipped like that.
Cheers

I will order a birth certificate and see if the bumpers were listed as an option.
Did German delivery cars come with all red tail lights? In the archives the pictures who them with what looks to be red. My car came with red ones. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

All red only on export/US model, or with tourist delivery. I do think, that this is your case!

I wonder if it was tourist delivery.
I know with buses tourist delivery came with MPH speedometers and other US spec items. My Ghia has a MPH speedometer but it’s dated 10/63 so obviously installed after the car was brought back to the US.
My car also does not have a standard swan neck exterior mirror. There are no holes drilled for any mirror, instead it came with a clip on round mirror that attaches to the gutter on the A pillar.
It also has weird seat belts, there is a shoulder harness but not lap belt. The belt. Is attached above the B pillar and at the tunnel. Nothing on the original floors.
Does any of this sound like a German delivery car? It certainly isn’t like any US car I’ve seen. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Started dismantling the car a few days ago and putting parts away where they will be safe and out of the elements.
It was amazing to find all four original floor mats and in usable shape. I used Water and soap to clean them and then wiped them down several times with Listrol.
I also took some photos of the odd reverse light mounted on the rear bumper blade. I don’t recognize the logo.
Also here is the exterior mirror which mounts via a clamp on the A pillar gutter. There are no holes in the body for a mirror which is also odd for a 62.

Tore the car down over the weekend. Aside from some sticky hardware and four big rodent nests no horrible surprises. Pans are shot, but no rot in the luggage tray, rockers or door bottoms.
When I get the time I’ll pull body panels and take them into the shop and strip them and body work them.
