During the movie I told my Wife that Bob Wells is a real person who is big into the alternative living scene, web sites, seminars, etc......
At the end she said she had no interest in living that life style, could we please not do it?
So we will stay in our humble small paid for house I guess......
I've always teased my Daughter and Son-In-Law that we will end up being the King of Queens Arthur living in her basement........ my Son-In-Law has apparently told my Daughter that if the need arises, he will gladly pay our taxes and utilities so we stay in our house and not live in his basement.

Dave, us too. When I was 18, everything I owned fit in my car. In my 20s everything including my tools fit in my 68 camper. Needed to feel not tied down. Well fast forward to today and I'm still in the same county I graduated high school. House is paid for and my wife retires this May.

Seems like Van people "want" the option that if all goes to h*ll they can live in their van and (perhaps) be happy.
And this movie may trash that notion.
For long-term van living.
In the first 5 days of a van trip, I can't wait to get farther from home.
But once the van kinda starts to point back towards the barn I'm looking forward to being home.
And my projects etc.
And fixin' on the van at home.
And my bed.
We're gonna watch Nomadland tonight. _________________

I thought the film was beautiful and very well crafted. The acting was very authentic- seems like only a couple/few professional actors, and the authenticity of the real-life "nomads" made for such a realistic film. Almost a documentary.
A very somber mood, tending towards sad. It seems the ability to be able to "go anywhere you want, see anything you want" was a slim ray of sunshine in otherwise dreary, struggling existences for some (many?) of them, especially those fighting to financially make ends meet. _________________ Grateful daily,

*NEWSFLASH*
This film isn't about you, white dude bored at home wondering what to do next; it's about a middle-aged woman who just lost her husband, her town, and what follows in the wake of that tragedy. It's not meant to promote 'Vanlife.' It's a story of grief and the arduous journey of finding home without a house and family. _________________ 1987.5 wolfsburg hardtop; 2.1

It was way more emotional than I was expecting. Just the level of grieving that Fern is going through is tough to watch at times without tearing up about it. I'm happy there are real communities like what Bob Wells promotes for people to help each other out.
I think it also is very timely with the current pandemic and the state of the US. People are on hard times and are forced to live in tough circumstances, it is almost too eerily real with how things are going. To paraphrase Bob in the film, "We're on a sinking ship and I'm just here to show people where the life boats are." _________________ '88 Sunroof Syncro 2.1L |

That sounds like a straightforward review of an honest movie. I hope it comes to Kanopy soon. I'll check back in five years or so with my review. _________________ - Jim

Had High hopes for the movie, after reading the book.
Fern was a minor character in the book
The book revolved more around the woman she worked with in the National park Linda May
I would suggest the book over the movie

How are folks watching it? I see it on Hulu, but we don’t subscribe. I don’t see it on Netflix or You Tube. We would rent it if there is a way to do so. Thanks. _________________ ☮️ |

I've had a $1.99/mo subscription to Hulu for a month now.
You could buy a month's worth and see the movie for $1.99. Cancel your subscription anytime.
Also there's a 30 day free trial period you can cancel before the month's up and you start paying. _________________ Grateful daily,

I'm always suspect of 30 day free trials. Hulu is available through my Firestick, so not sure how well getting out of a Hulu trial would go with Amazon as the go between. But thank you. _________________ ☮️ |

Very well made movie.
If you have to live in a van, it sucks!
If you want to live in a van, it's fun.
Bring a Westy into the formula, and it's a lot of fun!
I've been doing the Westy life for 4 years, traveling through the beautiful seasonal resorts (avoiding the snow) bartending and waiting. The money is good but temporary and I love it.
I would rather do this than to die in front of a TV watching crap.

I was somewhat happy it didn't tout the typical racial common denominators of so many modern films.
Also there was no crime at all, zero mention etc.
Some clearly embrace it, trading it for an exit from the rat race. A home is pretty "necessary" to raise a family.
Nomad-life becomes more do-able for empty-nesters or solo.
It kinda made me feel like if I'm driving my van around, camping on BLM lands etc, I don't deserve to enjoy it because some people don't have a choice.
The woman lost her home not by choice, but clearly didn't want a home, and wasn't much of a socialite.
The nomad life seemed fitting.
To add dignity to her situation you almost have to hate on people who have happy homes.
Which is a depressing thought that doesn't make anybody's world better.
I can say neither of us were "glad" we watched the movie.... _________________

Not what I took away but maybe I missed something.
I don't think Fern begrudged traditional home-dwelling. She lived it, lost it and was offered it again. Her being nomadic is a choice, ultimately. It comes with trade-offs that she accepts, though not without question or regret.
Fern's sister made a choice too. We all do.

I don't think people living in different situations feeling bad because someone else has a more difficult life does anyone any good.

I saw her dignity in the strength she put forth everyday to keep going in the face of her struggles, to provide for herself, doing whatever was needed to survive, even finding a bit of joy with friends every now and then. _________________ Grateful daily,

Less than the amount of people who die in their houses, alone and undiscovered for days.
Nomadic communities are still communities. People have been nomadic throughout our evolution. _________________ 91 Westy.

Just watched it today.
I've been following Bob Wells for awhile. Both through the RTR and HOWA.
I was actually just camping outside Quartzsite where the RTR portions were filmed. There is a yearly "Camp with Bob" that happens and it was there this year.
I met him and several other people in the film.
Most people in it were real van dwellers.
They weren't really acting so much as sharing their stories.
What you see of Linda, Swankie, Bob, Sue, etc. is what you get in person.
My wife is not interested in going houseless. I'm a nomad at heart.
So, right now, I go out and live on BLM or NFS land in my Westy and come home to visit. I've almost gotten it to the point I can work from the van long term.
This movie was *a* very good, honest, view of nomad life.
A perspective. And one that many people live.
It isn't as critical of working conditions for nomads as the book.
It isn't as critical of the systems that make nomad life a necessity for many as the book.
It also didn't highlight the growing number of people forced into nomad life or the rash of laws that seek to criminalize it (illegal to sleep in your van, zoning laws that say you can't live in a van on your property, etc.) that continue to propagate.
It also doesn't show the perspective of people who choose a nomad life (if even part time) like myself.
It does show (some of) the community, the resourcefulness, the beauty, and adventure of nomad life.
Over all, I really liked it, and hope it helps generate some much needed conversations. _________________ 1980 Westfalia (Manual) California 141000 Miles |
