PostPosted: Sat Feb 06, 2021 6:41 pm    Post subject: A/C temperature control switch Reply with quote

Taking my dash off (1989 Westfalia with factory AC) and AC switch broke pulling plug (switch fell apart). It's the switch which turns the AC on and sets temp, not the fan switch.

Found a part number (253 959 512) but none of our vendors have one or a replacement option and long since dc'd by VW. Not able to find any posts about how to go about sourcing a replacement switch. Anyone have any ideas on this or a solution?

Thanks in advance...

I just posted two days ago about this with no response. Mine is shot too. Not available new I called all the main vendors. I just bought one used from Affordable German in Arizona. Guy gave me a great price and was really nice to talk to.

I haven't taken time to look at the switch so not sure if it's a POT or a rheostat, wouldn't imagine it would be difficult to find resistance values and try to source a newer replacement.

Thanks Remraf, kind of what I was afraid of. I'll contact that wreckers and see if they have another. I'll also look again to see if I can fix mine but it seemed pretty wrecked. I'm surprised there's no obvious alternate option...

Drove my van yesterday. 90 camper air. The thermostat switch turns the AC off at the end of its sweep. To be honest I don’t feel a notch or click. The blower switch has positive clicks, but does not turn the AC off.

Honestly, if I still had my 86 that uses this switch I would snag one of these and squirrel it away for it seems like when these are gone, they will have then slipped into unobtanium world.

That switch looks suspiciously like something you'd find in one if not all three of the Merkin car brands from the '60s - '80s.

The switch in that link is for older vans, not the later style switch OP is looking for.

Yep, you are correct! Up to sometime in 86.

86...... 89 ...... they're similar aren't they? Laughing Laughing

I checked for the newer temp switch via VW part number and came up at a dead end, then GoWesty appeared!
I got suckered in.

The issue is that most cars of that era used a capillary tube ti sense temperature right there in the dash in front of the switch.

The Vanagon uses an electronic sensor WAY in the rear.

I wonder if this available switch can be made to work in place of the newer unavailable one?

I'm not sure, but it would be nice to locate some sort of replacement. I'm going used right now so I can keep moving forward with ALL the other issues I have. But given how much time and $ I just spent converting entire system to r134 I'd love to eliminate a cheap plastic switch as a potential point of failure.

I'm really surprised someone hasn't found something which replaces this switch. I'm looking for a used one but, honestly, it looks pretty simple. Hate to think the end of my AC system could come down to what looks like a $10 switch.

Isn't it basically a rheostat?
Or is it a Potentiometer?
With an on/off function.

You just need to match to the thermistor signal I imagine?

Out of my wheel house........

Think it's a POT as it has more than 2 terminals I think. That's the thing, this is one of those things I just want to buy! Very Happy

I'm reading, it seems to be a Potentiometer, apparently all have three wires.
VW's has four but it also turns on and off the A/C system.
Could this not be done by adding a 3rd switch? A lit push button like many American cars have had?
Then all you need to do us find a potentiometer that fits in the dash and the snowflake knob fits on.

Or am I over simplifying a much more complex process?

Hmmm...good pickup, looks like a pretty simple switch. I'll have to think about that, looks like a potential solution. Thanks!

Doing some searching, there are potentiometers available with built in On/Off switches.
I'm not sure what level of power they can carry.
It may be best to utilize a relay?

Anyway, do you have dimensions and a photo of your broken switch?
What diameter is the shaft?

How long is the shaft?

How does the knob mount to the shaft?

How does it mount to the dash?

How big around is the main unit?

How deep is the unit?

I suppose I could go pull mine out ..... but it is 15° out right now....... 🥶

I'll try and take a pic of switch next time I'm with van. As far as knob goes I wouldn't worry too much as it could easily be 3D printed. I was already contemplating this depending on whether I found a decent used one.
