Gentlemen,
Found these 94 dished Bus P&L when cleaning in the hoard..
(No that silver paint isn't my work)
Anybody recognize these things?
There's an 'S' cast in where the part number would go on a factory cylinder.
Pistons have the cast-in expansion plates, but no markings.
Maybe AA?
Who can solve the mystery?

Pretty sure those are NPR's. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Interesting, the dishes have a sharper edge than I'm used to seeing.

the steel plates on the inside of the pistons.
those fins are really heavy duty compared to Mahle or KS. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Ah! NPR.. Forgot about them.
Pretty good stuff from Japan right?
You can see the expansion plates in the pic,
Either side of the wrist pin boss.
IIRC, AA don't have the plates..? _________________ Bus Motor Build

The dishes look a bit like NPR.....but show a picture of the inside of the piston. Some NPR that I have had in my hands have a shallow grid pattern relief cast into the top on the inside.
Also they could be Repco.....made in Australia. Both are excellent. A lot of Repco for VW was reboxed KS and Mahle. Ray |

Digging thru another shelf, and the heads i -think- came off this motor are GEX(!)
So i think we have a winner...
Good call Don.
I take it you have a lot of experience with GEX motors..? _________________ Bus Motor Build

OK, say you work at GEX and you're re building a motor...
One head is bad on this motor, so you know the other one on the same motor of course is in perfect shape to last a long time...
Got to have a matched set of heads, you know... Quality goes in before the name goes on!
You'll want to take the time and make the AMC head you buy into a 'G' head like the other.
How do you do this, you might ask??
All it takes is a set of number stamps, of course!!
Viola! A matched set of 'G' heads, correct for this motor!
Also helps to have one kind of exhaust valve in one hole and a different one in the other.
The #3 chamber wants a bit more volume, right?
A tad lower compression because it runs hotter..
Fine, detailed building like this helps keep the head evenly heated when run.
Also,
If the plug insert sticks way into the chamber,
It can help hot starts by working like a glow plug?
Very innovative motor engineering going on at our favorite engine house! _________________ Bus Motor Build

Why is the bottom of that head faced off?, has it been fly cut so deep it was hitting the fins before sealing up?
Some spectacular stuff going on in that one, seems we can all learn from the "pros" with many thousands of engines under their belt. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

some shops face the bottom so they can mount it flat in a fixture to flycut it. The old RIMCO did that too.
Here is a photo I found of a couple NPR sets (prob 1800), samba gallery, and a VW vendor. Another photo of another set showed NPR stamped on the cylinder skirt right below where the fins start on the bottom.

You know what....probably my bad. I am probabl thinking of Repco pjstons. I have two sets 1700 pistons only.

any self respecting shop rests their reputation on GEX. when you want quality, look no further than GEX. you see, at GEX they are the ultimate in carbon neutral rebuilding. how you ask?
well, at GEX if one case 1/2 is bad they find another. with a precision ball hone GEX will skillfully line bore the crank and cam journals to less than exacting specs.
cylinder heads? pfft...1300 on the left, 1600 on the right baby!
i've seen enough silver engines to know a GEX when i see one. sorry for your loss _________________

gee Don - I thought you were going to say that their reputation from comments of others here is they got more CO2 emitting vehicles off the road than anyone else. And - they made money doing it without taxpayer subsidies. Think of the buses turned into homeless shelters when they broke down, or repurposed as chicken coops. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

You are both correct! The CO2 emitting vehicle finally exiting the road....is phase 2. A soft approach to forced compliance!
