Would like to by a 36hp shroud from someone who is “pick-up only”.

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2447977

Anyone willing to ship it to me in CT at my expense (I’ll even throw in something for your trouble)?

PM me.

Thanks!

Michael

Curious, why do you need it? I believe it’s too early for your car. I’m pretty sure 59 had the imprint for the air cleaner.

As you know I’m looking to put the engine back into manual-like appearance. The current shroud has clips for spark plug wires, so trying to get rid of the holes that will be left when I put in the wire tube. Thought that the 36hp for sale was the ticket. Perhaps you are saving me from yet another error.

So there are different 36hp shrouds? If you are referring to the indentation in the middle of the shroud, it’s doesn’t appear to be in the manual:

The spark plug wire tube stopped in May, 1959so it depends on when your Ghia was built.

Of course I'm assuming Ghias changed at the same time, which may not be true but probably likely.

Not sure about the fan shroud indent.
On Beetles the air cleaner got larger, which required the indent.
Ghias use a Bus-style off set air cleaner so maybe not needed or used?

Someone posted a pic of a 36hp shroud with an indent but no holes for the rubber spark plug wire holders. Maybe early 59?

Birth Certificate gives date of December ‘58. So looks like the tube is going on.
I can see why the Beetles air cleaner required the indent; doesn’t seem to be needed on the Ghia though.

I’d be happy with “manual picture correct”

VW didn’t make different engine components for Ghia except for the air cleaner set up which they shared with buses. Whatever bugs were using Ghia was using when it came to shrouds..

I was pretty sure that was the case. But it’s good that our car doesn’t need it.

Anyway... anyone in Buena Park with nothing better to do?

Don’t know.
I’m not even sure when they made the transition to the newer style shroud.

Well, since we are on the topic, can the shroud be replaced without dropping the engine?

What makes you think you have the wrong shroud?
If you go to the gallery and search Ghia coupe 1959 engine, there are plenty of examples with the same shroud you have.
Did someone tell you it was a 40hp shroud because it has rubber plug wire holders? If it has a hole for the choke cable it’s not a 40hp shroud.

Someone pointed out that I needed the wire tube. Hard to say if the hole for the choke was there originally or not as it is ragged. Let me look...

I know, throttle spring still wonky. Replaced it and don’t know why.

Pretty buggered up so who knows if it was original or not? 40hp shrouds also have an indented area for the top case bolt at the bottom of the shroud.
So it’s rainy out and I’ve got time to burn so I looked at a bunch of fotos in the gallery of 59 beetle and Ghia engine compartments as well as 58.
All the 58s had shrouds with no indent and metal tube.
It was a mix with 59s indicating that there was a mid year change. When the change was made would require delving into the KG parts book which is on this site and doing the research. I’m currently not that bored.
As for removing the shroud, yes you can do it without pulling the engine.

Thanks for playing Brau!

So, as our car is currently advertised as December ‘58, let’s call it early.

I thought that picture looked familiar. My old 1959 Pearl white cabriolet was built June 1959 and that was the original engine to the car. Also, at this point of production the doors, door glass, check straps and hinges had already changed to the newer style.

I think I know about the check straps— got the older metal springs.
But doors, door glass, and hinges? It would be interesting to see if I have those as well. Can someone elaborate?

Your December build Ghia has the early style glass, etc. My May 12th 59 build Ghia has the "newer" door glass, aluminum hinges, etc. I'm not sure when the transition started.
