Thank you sir.

After trimming off the excess on the rear edge of the header bow, I also wanted to recreate the rolled edge of the original. While I initially thought that this rolled edge was to stiffen the piece, I determined that it was probably more of a “safety feature” due to the fact that all of the interior facing edges are rolled.

Knowing that it was unlikely that I could bend this along the total length & it still look decent, I decided to use a section of 1/4” brake line & after bending it to shape, I clamped a couple of scraps to the bow as a guide & began tack welding the tubing to the bow.

Unfortunately, even though I have welded to brake tubing before, this particular type became quite brittle after welding to it & cracked where the weld met the tubing. Evil or Very Mad

Oh well… looks like I’ll be finding an alternative.

In the meantime, this happened.

So I liberated a wiper shaft from a Beetle, and just to give it a VW feel, I snagged a window crank from another & fused them together.

OK folks, I recently sold the Warthog and the buyer decided to have me replace the pans. I will post the process here to keep him updated & to bring everyone along for the ride.

The new owner purchased these “premium quality” pans from “The Thing Shop”…. These are the same thin gauge, crappy, vague stamping pans that are available through all the other vendors.

So… do not pay a premium for the same old shit.

Today’s task was to start prepping the pans by stitching up the relief cuts in n the passenger side pan. After cleaning off the paint & a little hammer & dolly work, I began filling the seams.

And after a bit of grinding & planishing, it’s a bit more presentable.

I will leave this last relief open until the pan is in the car.

Today was just a rinse & repeat of yesterday for the other pan half, clean off paint, hammer & dolly, stitch up, & clean off the excess.

World’s shortest attention span. Laughing

I still have it, it’s just been really busy & I have picked up a couple other projects… must…. continue…. to…. focus…

Too bad I can’t post about my air bagged ‘47 Plymouth business coupe with a TDI & 6-speed (on the column) manual transmission.

But here’s a taste…

Here’s how I converted an Audi Quattro transmission to rear wheel drive.

I'd love to see more on the TDI Plymouth. Not that you need more threads to keep up with....but if you were so inclined perhaps a thread on it would be allowed in the "Off-Topic" forum section?

After a couple foul weather events & waiting for the slush & brine to clear, I finally got the beast back to the shop to begin the tear down.

Today, I began to remove the pan bolts. My strategy for this is to break them all loose, back them out a bit, soak the threads with PBlaster, & then tighten them back up so that the penetrant can do its magic on the part of the bolts above the captive nut.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

As usual, the quality of the replacement pans leaves much to be desired. Due to vague stampings, lack of or misaligned holes, and thinner gauge of metal, I always (when I can.) use the original pan supports & outer bolt flange.

The factory pans have an additional bit of support for the jack points that can be seen here.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

It would not be possible to separate this in such a way that it could be used again if removed, so I began to assess how much of the bolt flange could be used.

I noticed some damage on the driver side that I wanted to correct before separating the body.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So I clamped some angle iron to it to use as a straight edge/buck, if you will, & began to beat it back into shape.

After inspecting the new seat tracks supplied by The Thing Shop, I decided to reuse the originals from the beast.

This means that I needed to strategically hack the original tracks out of the car. The first thing I did was to remove the passenger seat & it’s 2x4 seat brackets.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The carriage bolts that were used spun freely in the wood so I had to cut the nuts off the threads under the car.

After yanking the seat out…

I then made a few starting points by plunging the cutting disc through what was left of the pan.

And then began hacking away.

I never knew that the seat tracks were at such a jaunty angle in a thing. Think

Anywho, I finally got it lopped out.

Here you can see the huge disparity between the original tracks & the crappy ones supplied by The Thing Shop.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

It’s hard to see in this pic how much thinner gauge of sheet metal is used on the aftermarket tracks.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And even the front brace is completely different…
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

As I began to whittle away rotten old pan & the layers of patches, I saw that I needed to make a couple of repairs to the seat tracks. You can see that the end of the brace has rotted away.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Fortunately, some of the patch panels are of the correct gauge, so I lopped a section off.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And bent a lip to match.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I then carved out the rotten section on the brace.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And trimmed off a bit of the previously bent patch & trimmed it to fit.

And welded it in place.

Today I continued on with the repair of the seat track. My first step was to strip off whatever coating was on it. My initial thought was that it was some sort of bed liner material but after a bit of heat to soften it up…
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I quickly came to the conclusion that it was roofing tar. Evil or Very Mad

And whoever applied it, did so right over the untreated rust.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So I carefully carved out the rotted section.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And after paring off the remnants of the floor pan, I clamped a couple pieces of scrap to the seat track to use as a guide, and then clamped a new section of metal to that. (The piece that I bent previously was just a bit too thin.)
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I then flipped the piece over, & scribed a line onto the back of the patch.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I then trimmed the patch to shape (and apparently lost a few pics.)

Oh well, here’s the patch fitted in place.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And then glued back together.

Sorry, no. It was sold & moved on to its new owner.

I have since done most of the same to a Beetle…

Bummer! I'm a big fan of Things. Was really looking forward to see your take on one.

Good work on the Beetle!
