Hello, Quick propane tank related question on a 1986 Vanagon GL Westfalia. Our tank was giving off a propane smell fron the circled location in the attached image. I was told by another vanagon community member across another internet community this part is a pressure relief outlet. Does anyone have any experience replacing this or happen to know a part number? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you! |

as you've probably seen on reddit, that is the propane relief valve. they are replaceable. fyi, you are also receiving wrong information on reddit, aka
"Tanks are filled until propane comes out of that one way valve."
stick here for correct, peer reviewed information. of course we're wrong frequently too but things USUALLY get corrected. _________________ -dan

valve may leak, OR the valve to tank threads may leak. If threads, then you may simply need to reinstall with fresh sealing tape.
Do a soap bubble test to reveal the source of the leak, make a mix of dish soap a d water and brush it on and around the valve, in fact be proactive and do so on all propane connection on the van. watch for bubbles being created to pin point the leak(s). |

Thanks I will try the soapy water test, I did a bit more research and found that I have a Manchester tank. Does anyone have a part number for the release valve if it comes to replacing it. I have not been able to find a part number. The closest thing I have found is release valves for forklift propane tanks which I am unsure will fit. |

Often relief valves have markings on them indicating their relief pressure, you want that to match. The other consideration is the thread size to the tank. I have no idea if this is a metric or NPT thread, or perhaps a british standard? You can remove the valve and take it to perhaps a hardware store to test fit into female fittings to check. (dont leave the hole in tank open, so as a spider can crawl in. debris in tank can clog ports, so cover any opening with tape if it is to be left open for a while).

Any propane supplier will have that part. _________________ "Blanch" '85 Westy
