Searched, but not found: has anyone ever used the dish drying rack in their galley for griddle? Me neither; just asking . . .[/b] _________________ '90 White Westy ("White Lightning 😎")

some/many POs have in the past with limited and poor results.
it leaves scorching on the bottom of the rack and warps the metal so it doesn't sit flat anymore.
do so at the risk of being kick in the jimmies by the next owner..
yeah, yeah I know you're going to own that van forever..
just like your 1st girlfriend and ex wife were supposed to be forever
don't do it.
should be a PSA addendum to the owners manual. which is that paper coaster in the glovebox where an owner goes to find out something they should have done/not done after doing it. _________________

I’ll trade you a real griddle for your drying rack! _________________ 1982 Diesel Westfalia 1.6 NA - The Shellakabuukiee |

the material is stainless, and thin at that. it's a rilly rilly poor conductor of heat so you'll get insane hot spots that will burn food and leave other areas uncooked. totally not worth the scorch marks. _________________ -dan

OK and since we're on the topic.. here is the Vanagon supplemental camper manual
scanned in and saved here for everyone on thesamba
the canadian models likely didn't get this alert, as they never received the 'drainboard' feature.. their government RV review body probably felt that it wouldn't mix well with Labatt Blue.

We didn't get the drip tray because it isn't big enough for giant pieces of back bacon.
I love my drip racks. And yes, someone heated one of them up a bit; it's a bit warped. BUT it was free from a kind soul.
Someone needs to pick up the ball here in Canada and make those trays. Maybe with a nice VW logo etched on the underside.
On my '88 the ball-spring "latches" were already present on the lid. On the '81 the holes for those parts were already drilled.

has anyone ever actually used the "drying rack"? would be cool to custom mod it into a griddle instead or something more useful... |

I'm more likely to dry dishes on a dish towel draped over the stove grate. I do use the stainless "griddle" as a nice flat spot when not using the stove.
I also have a griddle that sits on top of the stove grate.
Replacing the drain rack with a griddle does sound like a bit of genius and may have the added bonus of stifling all of the rattles that I use dish towels to quiet.

On [edit some? All?] Canadian Westies there's a piece of stainless attached to the lid underside. I have to wonder it it's there to protect the lid against heat from burner flame and/or hot pot/pan. Maybe it also serves to provide an easier to clean surface. The drip tray would potentially provide the same functions. That said, maybe a drop down griddle wouldn't get hot enough to transfer excessive heat to the underside of lid.
edit: the other aspect of all this is that if one was in a hurry to drive off, if the stove lid was shut on a somewhat hot griddle, how would that pan out? The shield/drip tray may be a shield against a hot OE "grill" damaging the lid underside if its closed too soon after stove use.

I use it all the time. I enjoy letting the dishes air dry while I do other more fun things. It’s more sanitary too, although that’s not the main reason I use it. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |

Agreed! And, it can provide more food related counter space.
I was serious with my comment of someone re producing these. The market would be quite small but with some basic hardware and possibly mods to lid latch, it's not hard to install a drip tray on a van w/o one.

I've used it a handful of time s to drain/dry. My question is why is it flat? Well, I mean it has a little "grade" and a drain at the sink end, but I mean, if it was intended to help things dry, it should be wavy, or something to let things like bowls upside down drain out and flow to the sink. I often stack bowls or pans on another item to make this happen. _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |

The first year of van ownership (original owner 91 Westfalia), I had both burners on and turned my back to the stove and the drying rack fell onto the burners. I've had the warped drying rack forever!! |

My guess is because it saved 50c during the manufacturing process but I agree, a little "topography" would be nice. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |
