I have been looking for a nice Red Carat Vanagon but it seems not many tornado reds were produced in 90 & 91. Any input from fellow owners!!???

Well at first I thought I'd see several in the Classifieds, but out of 46 '90/'91s, only 1 Tornado Red, a Syncro too. At least I think it's a Tornado Red.... Confused

Here is our '91 Carat/Wolfsburg, bought in 1998 w/ 45 K miles:

no they didn't make alot of them..
it was a 'specialty' color and vanagons weren't moving fast or produced as many in 90/91..

so less overall units in production
a less offered color option
and less survive the last 30years.

some are likely disguised as pink Wink

They were rarer than other colors, but they used to be fairly easy to come by. I've owned two of them, and a close friend of mine has one, too. I think if you keep a close eye on the classifieds here and Craigslist, you'll find one eventually.

FWIW, they were only available as GL and Carat models. No Syncros were sold here in Tornado red.

There are at least two here on Fidalgo Island. One that belongs to a very picky individual who bought it down south with fresh paint and one that looks like a beater. I remember others being here before. Be careful what you wish for.

The 87 Quantum Syncro Wagon I had for a very long time was Tornado. Tornado from that time period was not clear coated. The paint oxidizes. I can't tell you how many times I had to polish it. At least once a year. Eventually the white primer started showing through at the creases. Freshly polished and waxed it glowed and looked wet.

If you had one re-painted you could get it clear coated like a modern red car. My wide has a Honda Fit that is Milano red. It is nine years old and still looks pretty good. You can still see all of the swirl marks in the paint from the dealer wash boys. She has a hard time with the concept of detailing a vehicle. I have never offended her by insisting that I detail her car. I am thinking of trying Griot's new ceramic wax on the Fit. If I do so I will probably polish out some of the swirl marks that it came with when we bought it new.

Shopping for an antique, I would not limit my selection by focusing on color.

You will pass up a lot of Blue, Maroon or other color diamonds seeking a red lump of coal.

You want to shop by color? Visit the new car dealers.

Try shopping for a certain color van only offered in limited numbers for half of one production year. When you find one you buy it sight unseen, and then fly 1100 miles away and drive it back home. THAT'S dedication to a color.

The ones I've seen over the years have been...shall we say, "resting." One in my work neighborhood (it sold for a grand, as I was later told by the owner)...

Dave, when one wants a Tornado red vanagon. they WANT a Tornado Red vanagon.. Wink

the hard part is not getting a Tornado pink van..

so to the OP, if you find a RED van, ask when it was repainted and be leery of a quality respray.. as a non-quality respray costs MORE to correct than having a pink van repainted.

but man this is a NICE VAN.

Dave, C'mon, you are not the OP. He has his desires, as do we all, and they are just as valid as yours.

Here's a "Titan Red Metallic" This 90 tintop was originally a burgundy color, I believe "Bordeaux Red metallic" was what it was called ?

By accident I gave the painter the wrong paint code, and it got shot with Titan Red Metallic. Honestly though, it was a fortuitous error, as I think this is a far more interesting color !

Yes I "can read this" Maybe I'm not color blind just dyslexic ? Smile

I can NOW appreciate though why color codes, rather than names, are used in the painting/printing industry !

Go for it! Go get your red Vanagon.
I'm just pointing out the obvious antique condition point.
They stopped making these 30 years ago. There are a lot of old rotten apples in the Vanagon barrel.

I wonder if that's what color mine is. Mine seems a bit more maroon but it's hard to tell on a computer monitor. Can the paint name/code be found in the VIN or somewhere else on the van?
