There are National security issues involved in the USPS trucks and who manufacturers them.

Grumman Aircraft only made the bodies of the old LLV. The engine, chassis and drive train were standard Chevy S10 pick up trucks.

There was a reason the old LLV's did not have A/C. When you buy 165,000 trucks and can save $1000 each truck not installing A/C how much money have you saved? Now imagine if 165,000 trucks use $1 less of gas each day from not running the A/C how much money have you saved?

Not one single penny of your taxes goes to fund the USPS.

they won't be getting 20-30 years out of these, thats for sure.

poor fuel economy? have you watched a postal worker drive? they fuckin boot it like the flag just dropped.

you could run an iron duke on sand and aardvark piss and never kill one.

i dunno, unless they have in the contract a service agreement of some sort i am willing to guarantee the technology will have these in the crusher in 10-15 years.

i mean shit...NASA was begging for old computers at one time

https://www.nytimes.com/2002/05/12/us/for-parts-nasa-boldly-goes-on-ebay.html

even if these were mechanically stout and retrofittable the cost of both mechanical and software engineering will put them in the grave.

Just so you know, I have heard that the old LLV delivery trucks will not be for sale to the general public when they are replaced by the new model. They are all scheduled to be crushed.

Can't argue that point.
I had parts from Tabari stuck in LA for 9 days before they finally moved in my direction.

Now I have parts coming from a certain Asian country. They have been stuck in the post system for 12 day's and no forward movement.

The plus side of things here is. I have a PO Box. So I don't have to look at that POS stopping by the house.

It needs a 6" chop. To make it look somewhat normal.
Maybe channeled too. But instead of lowering the body lines. The channel would add metal back, to bring the hideously low body back to something acceptable. Shocked

The USPS is still required to pay $5 billion a year to Prefund the future health care costs of retired employees for 75 years into the future. To put that in plain English the USPS is required to pay health care costs for retired employees before they are even born. It was a scam created in the early 2000's because crooked politicians thought the USPS should be able to make billions in profit and then use those profits to fund their pet projects. If the USPS would have been allowed to cancelled Saturday delivery like they wanted to 10 years ago, and the prefunding requirement was eliminated, they would be completely solvent and would have already gotten their new trucks. In reality the Gov't is only giving back the money they stole from the USPS.

Electric Vehicles may work in the big city, but will never meet the demands of Rural delivery.

That is incorrect. Sadly.....very incorrect.

The USPS was DESIGNED to be completely self funded and forced to be so under the 1986 "postal accountability and enhancement act".

However because of two primary problems......the USPS by the end of fiscal year 2018 had lost over $69 billion dollars over the previous 11 fiscal year cycles....and had a total debt of over $143 billion which is more than twice its annual revenue. Projected debt at the beginning of 2021 (by september 2020 accounting) is estimated to be over $200 billion dollars.

This is WHY congress was being asked....as they have every year for over 20 years.....to emergency fund the USPS in the new fiscal year budget.

However they ARE SUPPOSED TO BE SELF FUNDING.....and its become an endless treadmill of taxpayer bailout EBERY YEAR...... and this is WHY the last administration stated in June they were moving to cut them off for funding. This is WHY it became a political football with looming mail in voting for the last election.

Two two items that have caused this deficit.....and both are currently equal in how much they bleed out of the USPS budget:

1. In the postal realignment act of 1986 mentioned above.....a vast bill with amendments spanning several administrations.....the postal service gained new requirements for how they cut contracts for CONTRACTED services ....like parcel shipping.
The USPS does not own a single aircraft. They never have. Since the early 1900's all air mail and overnight has been contracted by 3rd party companies.

The postal realignment act stated that whatever the USPS contracts services for.....they MUST actually cover the cost if the srevice. A VERY GOOD thing.....if its actually happening. More on this in a minute.

However......in that same bill......the USPS became the first and only Federal entity required to pay for the healthcare AND retirement of all current and FUTURE empolyees........OUT OF THEIR EXISTING YEARLY OPERATING BUDGET.

This is NOT FEASIBLE.
Not one single federal arm or department, does this. The military does not do this. You cannot fund an ever growing cost center.....that gives no actual benefit to the services you render......out of a limited operating budget.

The military....like the post office.....has employees that when they retire...have pension and health costs covered for life.....rightfully so. You cannot take from the active war and training budget to pay for this ever increasing number and still have enough to cover active military costs. Same goes for the post office.

This started the deficit treadmill.

The other big budget killer.......

2. structural changes to the actual RATES charged......not for regilar mail and letters.....but for PACKAGE/PARCEL shipping......

For quite some time now.....Fedex has been the SOLE contractor for USPS for overnight and 2nd day air for letters and packages. When the parcels are larger...over a certain size and weight....they go in Fedex air for distances over 50 miles and on Fedex trucks for 50-100 miles.
Letters and small parcels....are sub-contracted by Fedex .....to use space available....in airliner holds.

The USPS.....has "0" aircraft of its own.

The problem is that Fedex has a very narrow margin on their own costs. Aside from profit.....it costs what it costs. However......if you compare USPS rates with Fedex rates in weight and size.....example top two lines below.....

USPS for a parcel out to 50 miles is $26.35. Fedex is $31.55. This simply reflects profit.
Line 2.....
USPS charges the same cost for a package out to 2000 miles. Fedex charges $52.30....reflecting profit + ACTUAL COST.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The USPS...... is picking up the TAB for this difference in actual cost.

So...with the advent of large scale internet shopping and millions of small online businesses
.....the USPS has been SUBSIDIZING the difference in parcel....not letters and documents.. .but PARCEL shipping....to stay competitive with the people whose actual business it is to provide rapid parcel shipping.....and they have been doing it at a LOSS.....and for both of these cost centers......they have been getting bailed out by your tax dollars.....every September for about the past 30 years.

What both the Obama admin and the Trump admin have been fighting for.....was to streamline USPS costs and get the USPS OUT of subsidized package service.

Its not the USPS's business. Thats the business of UPS, Fedex, DHL etc.

By the way......not to get political......but the disappearing mailbox craziness from past year?.....that was mandated and begun....in 2011 under the "2011-2012 postal service protection act".
Any postal box that received less than 25 letters per day could not pay for its yearly maintenance and service....and was slated to be removed from its location. Same with postal substations where service dropped below cost effective threshold.

Traveling the country for a living......I have seen truckloads of mailboxes moving to the scrappers....at least twice a year.....for the last 8 years.....from New England....through the midwest....to California. It always makes local news. People send in videos and the local TV squawks "who is stealing our mailboxes!!!?".... Laughing

The moral of that last comment....is dont beleive the media and do your own research. Last year we were all told it was a scam perpetuated by the Trump administration......to affect mail in voting....when in fact it was an ongoing program signed into law during the Obama administration.

The bottom line is that USPS is fantastic.....and is a very necessary service. But they need to stop diddling with overnight and short notice parcel shipping....or pass on the real cost to users....not a SUBSIDIZED cost.....and they need to seperate their operating budget from their administrative budget.....or we will be bailing them out every year forever.

Sorry for the rant. Ray

Not at all. I didn't get any of this from any news anywhere.

I work with companies small and large who ship volumes ranging from thousands to tens of millions year ....in both dollars and product volume.

As the pandemic began shutting down the airlines at end of April....at the same time..... everyone staying home began ramping UP their "through the mail" home shipments and deliveries.....simultaneously due to the airline shutdowns and the move to regional jets (pretty much qnything bigger than a 737 200 was parked).....most of which dont have jack shit for cargo capacity......Fedex quickly lost over 70% of their small parcel "fast shipping" capabilities.

Fedex in turn who had been using some limited 4th party air freight contracting with UPS and even some with Amazon who had their own limited but expanding fleet (prime air) at the start of 2020.......could no longer get that space available. Amazon was fully booked doing their own thing and will be almost doubling their fleet size by 2023.

UPS was booked as well. This means that the mail was screwed up too.....because Fedex ships all of their overnight and 2nd day parcels.

By May of 2020.....I was getting questions from virtually all of my clients when i arrived on site or on conference calls....as to whether I was seeing this as a trend elsewhere.

My CLIENTS.....were regurgitating "News/media" BS.....because its all they had or bothered to find.

I started researching at the request of numerous people. Only about half of what was in the news was true.....and most of what was actually important was not, reported anywhere. Because It did not fit the narrative of either side.

It was during this research which included "0" media news sources.....that I came across the funding issues with the post office. That funding issue started to become "news" at the end of July and early August as it was politicized.

You made a blanket statement that the USPS is "self funded". That is 100% patently false.....and yet you accuse ME of beleiving media hype?

Go to this Google search link

https://www.google.com/search?q=how+much+was+the+p...p;ie=UTF-8

Or simply Google "how much was the post office funded in 2020"

The first link is to the PDF report of the USPs inspector general with their budget request of $250,000,000. Thats just the organisation outside of the USPS proper.....that polices the loss rates through policies. Thats federal tax dollars.....but thats just peanuts. Whats next is the key......

While there is not one single $1 budgeted in the federal budget for the USPS....absolutely true!......HOWEVER......the USPS is operating at a loss.....and has been for roughly 25 years.....and the loss rate exceeds their operating revenue budget.....by an,average of 2.5X!

And.....because they are a "Federal" entity.....the US goverment is liable by law....to cover their losses. That means our tax dollars.

By the 1986 law (tbe postal accountability and enhancement act)....losses by the USPS MUST come out of their operating revenue. However....since the losses typically EXCEED the revenue of USPS (meaning not enough income)......if they are not covered.....USPS becomes insolvent....which we cannot allow. Its too important.

So every year....like clockwork.....USPS gets bailed out by uncle sam at the end of September for the new fiscal year operating budget. EVERY YEAR.

By the way....yes....the Trump admin.....was refusing to fund the USUAL annual funding of the USPS this past year.....because it was in line with the postal streamlining mandate of 2011. It was about cutting budgets. And....with postal shipping at an,all time high during tje pandemic.....one might ask if the USPS was/is self funding.....why do they need to be bailex out...again?
They got bailed out anyway.....to the tune of $10 billion by the CARES act in October 2020.

Facts.....

Simply look up the requisite postal bills I mentioned and DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH.....before you accuse someone of not knowing what they are speaking of. Ray

YOU give it a rest

Perhaps if you did read my 10k word essay.....and do the relevent research.....you might actually learn something.

The USPS was bailed out in october of 2020.....AGAIN...to the tune of $10 billion.....of taxpayer money.....just for their operating budget for the remainder of 2020. This did not even touch the $165 billion they are already in the hole for.....not to mention the debt service (interest) that will surpass $200 billion by first quarter 2021.

Dave....you seem like a good guy. Smart too.....

But do your research. Just because you don't want to read my 10k word essay....does not mean you are correct.

So Ray , why when my kitchen aid products were meant to be shipped Fedex, i had to go to the post office to pick them up? ( only open 8-12 monday to friday) no rural delivery. Also they had to be resent because my order was placed before thanksgiving, and still had not arrived by January 15th. Two weeks later the original order arrived from Fedex at my door. Two sets of meat grinders no waiting.

Not to mention my Fixd OBD2 for the boy which never showed up.

Also stamps cost ten cents in 1976 ,200 yrs of postal service, now they cost 55 cents.

In 1976 a new car was $3200, today most new cars are in the $25,000 and up price range.

What cost $1 in 1976 now cost $4.60
