I was cleaning up the distributor and made sure the rotor and cap I got fit OK.

The rotor did, the cap did except the alignment tang was too narrow, the cap can rotate a degree +/- ?

I thought "That's odd, I'll need to make sure it is the right cap."

Anyway I put it in yesterday and it occurred to me that maybe the distributer on the 2.1 in the garage might have a dust cap?

SCORE! It does!

It turns out that the dust cap us held in place by the alignment tab on the distributer cap!
The black plastic is molded to fit into the alignment slot.
The sloppy cap was because I didn't have a dust cover!

Moral?
Put on your dust cover folks.

And here I thought the moral was to wear nitrile gloves in the shop.

i assume you'll be de-dusting the the dust cap. important to have the top side clean for reduced spark jumps and the bottom side clean for, well, cleanliness sake.

i don't know if you'll put the RF shield on the outside, i really like running without it so that the dist cap gets cleaned each time i wash the engine. dirt and high voltage mix really well and the electrical pixies have a dance party all over the top of the cap.

i liken running without the RF shield as "running without containment" in my bad boy, Reaver mind [Serenity/Firefly reference].

Dave employs my method -- transfer the dirt from the part to your skin, then go in the house and wash.

Gloves?
Why yes, gloves are for messy tasks, oil based wood stain, packing CV joints, handling liquids that stink horribly and tge smell lingers even when clean, Diesel, Mineral Spirits, etc.

For simple repairs? It all washes off.

Besides, who wants "Girlie" Soft Hands?

I'll use gloves today doing my CV joints ...... lots of them!
Lots of paper towels too!

It's not about your hands, it's about your health. Don't ruin your next 30 years!

I ordered a 10 pack of these Gloveworks HD gloves. Each pack has 100 gloves. When I have a 1000 gloves I don't hesitate to use them. I think I am down to my last 2 boxes, I will need to make another order this summer.

Most of the problems come when you inhale or ingest one of these automotive fluids and gloves will not help with those kinds of exposure, nor will gloves do anything to help if you get your clothes soaked in a fluid. At least gasoline (and thus used motor oil) no longer has lead in it which can a cause long term neurological problems.

I would guess that gloves would help the most when handling brake cleaner and other products that have solvents in them, such as the methanol mentioned for windshield washer fluid, and of course gasoline is a solvent as well along with being highly flammable and explosive.

There are lots of potential dangers out there, I worked in a shop rebuilding big truck transmissions and differentials years ago and the guy who I worked for who was only around 35 years old at the time could barely use his hands any more as he had spend so much time using hammers to drive out bearings and such and all different sizes of impact guns to loosen and tighten bolts.

This thread took an unexpected bumpy trip down the dirty hands and hazardous auto chemical road!

I was only saying "Hey! The cap fits properly only IF you have the dust cap!"
