So I just bought this dune buggy and I am sorting all the hacks from the previous owners, one of them is the guy cut off the lower rear shock mount. What are my options here? what are the ramifications of no rear shocks, I am assumming it is dangerous, why would someone do that? more ground clearance? Help please I am a newbie to hack cars.

It is certainly odd that someone would cut the lower casting off.
You're going to have to replace both castings or weld a custom lower mount. _________________ All your Buses are belong to us.

Here is a generic drag racing lower shock mount. You could make your own mounting plate that bolts to the trailing arm using the 2 rearmost bolts then fab up a lower shock mount boxing it in to make it stronger than what is shown in the pic.

Perhaps you can find something suitable here to replace missing mounts...

Or just get replacement axle tubes.... Check Classified...

On the street that modification is seen with Bugs running rear drop plates. I've never run them and I've never done business with this company, but here is a picture of drop plates, including pictures of them installed. I suppose something similar without the axle drop could be made to provide a lower shock mount.
No rear shocks is certainly not good for the ride, but it may not be that bad. There is a fair amount of friction in the stock suspension design, especially the rear. I've been running without front shocks for years on my buggy. _________________
