|

Hello,
I am coming over from the Type 4 forum hoping to find some information on a deck lid that I have. I am not sure which Beetle model it came from, but from the research I did here https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=490378 , it might come from a convertible. I am not 100% sure. I could not find any stamping, aside from one on the handle
Can anybody help identify this lid?
thank you in advance,
Abel

It looks like it's from 1969 just due to the water collector. But without the water collector it could be used on a 1969-1971. |

I bought my 1970 sedan in late 1972, and it had a two-vent lid with water deflector in the engine lid pretty similar to what is shown in the photo.
In USA, two-vent lids were used on 1970 and 1971 sedans, and on convertibles 1969 and earlier. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Air intake slots were not added until 1970 model year. In 1972 slots were increased to four sets. So....it's a 1970 or 1971. Definitely NOT a 1969. |

I agree. It is definitely a 70. A friend of mine has an original 70 with the internal rain deflector _________________ 1968 1500 RHD Lotus White Beetle since birth. In the hospital for major surgery

are there any clues that would tell one way (sedan) or the other (convertible)?
As far as I know, the deck lid is original and came with another car that I purchased. |

Convertibles for 1968 and 1969 used the exact same twin louver decklid as what was later introduced on the 1970 sedan. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Hmm, my 70 convertible has 4 sets of vents and the rain guard. I cannot confirm though that it is original (even though original hidden paint matches) |
Convertibles got four sets of louvers starting in 1970.

At least for USA:
1970-on Convertibles had 4-vent engine lids
1972-on sedans had 4-vent engine lids
Note however that 1970 and 1971 convertibles had slightly different 4-vent configurations from the 1972-on 4-vent engine lids. Someone will provide a photo. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. The '71 now has the 1835 engine, swapped from the '70. Here is my 73 standard on a road trip a few years ago. Rainy misty day in Colorado, just the opposite in Kansas the deck lid is propped open that day. On the deck lid you can see the difference in the number of slots on the lid.

I think you're selling a little too cheap IMO. Twin carb guys would pay that for the rain thingy on the inside! _________________ '73 super. |

thanks for that. What would be a reasonable price for it?
A friend told me that some people put these lids on their Beetles for extra cooling when installing larger and hotter engines |

This is the 1971 body on my 1973 Super Beetle it’s just like that one except doesn’t have the black thing underneath. So probably that one is from a 1970 I think a guy on YouTube had one just like that too he had gotten. |
