I am looking into either refurbishing our existing tank with new shut-off valve and two-stage regulator or buying a new propane tank.
Looks like the Manchester tanks from Go Westy and Van Cafe are the same unit - $650 with regulator:
https://www.vancafe.com/253070601D-p/253070601d.htm
https://www.gowesty.com/product/lp-tank/2447/lpg-tank-with-regulator-
Bus Depot has a tank from Westfalia that runs $110 cheaper with a different style regulator (is that two-stage?):
https://www.busdepot.com/253070601d
I don't know much about LP tanks and am not sure about the differences here. If I rule out refurbishing, are there any pros and cons between these options? Thanks. _________________ '85 Westfalia 1.9L

Don't waste your money on a new one unless yours is beyond hope. Refirb is simple and cheap

You can refurb with new hardware for about half if you are willing to follow simple directions and have time to remove old paint and rust then repaint the tank.
First step is to remove the valves and inspect the interior of the tank, with a camera, no (as in zero) rust/corrosion is allowable. Next strip the tank (after lightly reinstalling the valves),. Inspect for rust and corrosion especially at the welds. These tanks were made of very high quality steel and most are still in excellent condition.
Order all new hardware ie valves (Rego) and regulator (Westyventures). Follow the instructions on the REGO website.
Mask off and prime, repaint. Wait until fully dried/cured, reinstall.
Systematically check for leaks with soapy water.
Enjoy
Note The brass fitting are most likely in good condition but very closely inspect after cleaning (no powered wire brush). _________________ Schau in das Buch |

The BD regulator is the correct one for your vanagon. I refurbed our tank too. There is some appeal to having a new tank show up and you just bolt it in. I'm very cheap. _________________ ☮️ |

All 3 are Manchester tanks.
Manchester was the original supplier for Vanagon Westys.
Yes, Westfalia bought USA made tanks for campers sold to the USA/CA market.

My tank is very good cosmetically with minimal corrosion. I would like to pursue the refurb route as I am not eager to spend $600 on a new tank. But safety is the primary concern.
Any thoughts on this GW tech article? https://www.gowesty.com/tech-article-details.php?id=62 They site that age and lack of a modern auto-stop filling port are reason to replace. _________________ '85 Westfalia 1.9L

^This is good to know.
Does anyone have a good source for the shut-off valve? Mine is certainly leaking in between fully open and fully closed. Bleeder valve as well? _________________ '85 Westfalia 1.9L

Depending upon model of valve, some can be rebuilt.

You dont have expire date on propane tanks in the states?
Here we have a 10 year date and you can have it inspected and recertified for an additional 10 years. After that you need to replace it. _________________ Zoltan

State by state here, like most things.
Short version, if it can be removed , it needs DOT cert every 10 years
If it is permanent, it’s an ASME cert
...but enforcement varies widely by region. _________________ .ssS! |

All the parts in one purchase - nice! That's a pretty good price too after looking at a2wolfsburggli's part list. _________________ '85 Westfalia 1.9L

Was checking this price again tonight and Bus Depot raised their price by $110!
Also does not include the regulator, so make that $155. Now more than GW or Vancafe. _________________ '85 Westfalia 1.9L
