Greeting from Canada,

Just wanted to introduce my 1970 181 project. I'm realistically a couple years away from completion (as I'm lazy).

The photos are from last fall (before the Canadian winter put any progress in my unheated garage into hibernation).

This will be built as an "affordable" (I say in air quotes as it's all a matter of perspective) fun ride versus a true nut and bolt restoration. I am doing all work myself (which is the affordable aspect) so it's taking time, but that's what it's all about.

Will probably also run fibreglass fenders (initially anyway) as the front fenders were toast.

Plans for this year include: running new brake lines; finishing body work and paint (I play guitar in a surf band so am using 1957 Chev sea foam three digit paint code single stage urethane - as you can see on the front clip); and an engine rebuild (will be shortly getting a spare 1973 T1 case line bored to build a stock 1600).

Am also considering running used aftermarket wheels (I have Chev and ford wheel adapters) for the first couple seasons if I can find something super cool that will let me avoid any rubbing (backspace) challenges (any suggestions?).

Will also likely run this without doors or top for the first couple years (and work out the details as I enjoy the ride)

Welcome! Looks good so far. A 1970...is it German made? You should have the reduction boxes too. Pretty rare car either way!

Thanks very much Joe. Yes it's German made with original LSD swing axle transmission and reduction boxes.

Welcome, bienvenue
It seems you have the M55/1 option: Without heater.
Do you have the handle to open the trunk in or under the glove box?
I own a 181 from december 1969, also a 1970 model. Cool

Thanks el_safari,

December 1969 - awesome!!

Looks like the handle would be under the glove box (pic below).

Interesting, so what year did the trunk release move to inside the glove compartment. Anybody?

Admiral,....What are you going to do for heat for those Canadian winters?

1971 for the civilian model.
For the military model there are still 1970 models, with the original 1500H single port motor, registered at the beginning of 1971.

Hi Semper_Dad, once completed this will be strictly a three season ride, so no need for a heater Smile

In case there's any interest (and who doesn't like pictures?) here's a pic of the tags that were removed for paint / body work.
