Ok, I've searched here and the Bentley and can't find my answer. I am attempting to put my Transmission back onto the chassis. I bought a nose cone to chassis seal but it doesn't seam to fit correctly. Do I have the right part??? The chassis hole is a circle while the rubber seal is rounded at the top and square at the bottom. I got the part from WW.

The second pic looks right, I think. The top opening goes around the top three splines on the nosecone. The side opposite the part numbers just sets against the flat part of the chassis... _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.

perfect...i had the same question and i was pretty sure i had the same answer and you helped confirm it! thanks!!
on a related note...after inserting tab a into slot b, does the chassis side of the seal actually fit in that round hole in the chassis or is it just pressed/forced against the round hole/opening in the chassis when the trans is all mounted up?
i only ask because i tried to mock it up with the seal in the hole and it didnt like the fit all too well.
thanks in advance for any & all help!! _________________ Silas

Look at the first picture. Orient your parts the same way. Turn the seal around so it oriented the way it is in the second picture. Push the seal on the nose cone so the three ribs on the nose cone fit into the grooves on the seal. Now install the transmission. The face of the seal will mate up against the face of the pan. _________________ Chris

Is it possible to install this seal from the inside of the bug with the transaxle in place? |

Thanks for the explanation! I was trying to figure out the exact same thing.
On a slightly different note, should the front transmission mount be installed on the chasis or the tranny first? I had mine on the tranny but couldn't get it to seat well. _________________ Martin

I install the trans mount on the torsion housing first.
Then install the trans. But you might have to modify a wrench to get the trans nut tight.
Make sure to install the trans ground strap too. _________________ I have learned over the years.

I was using a 17mm nut that was too large to allow a wrench or socket to fit. It was the correct thread size so I could hand tighten it but couldn't fit a wrench or socket on it! Once I figured that out it was much easier! _________________ Martin

Pretty sure my 1970 uses a 15mm wrench for its nuts there.
Not sure on my 1971 as its transmission has never been removed. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I will double check but I am pretty sure that is what is on mine now, small chance it could be a 14mm? It does work though.
Now I need to know what the nut/bolt/washer combination is for the e-brake cable bracket to the backing plate. I put a 14mm nut and bolt that was about 20mm(?) long with the bolt head on the back (outside) and the nut on the inside and it interfere's the shoe.
I should have taken a photo and will tomorrow. I couldn't find it in the Bentley (might just be me?). Anyone? _________________ Martin
