So, I got this 90 Tintop back together and after some tweaking, it was running very good yesterday mid afternoon.
Very good actually.......

This morning I get up, temperatures in the low 20’s, yesterday was pushing 60.
It was hesitant to fire but did on the 2nd try and from that point it was all downhill!

It searched for an idle, up and down, fast idle to almost stalling, back and forth.

Finally it stalled.

It didn't want to start after that.
The coolant was just beginning to get warm but not at all up to temperature.

I hooked up the fuel pressure gauge, a tad low at 26psi so I put in a new pressure regulator.
Still about 26 psi.

Crap! That old fuel pump I decided to run is dying!

I put in the new Bosch fuel pump.......

Yep, you guessed it!
26 psi.

Now I'm thinking my pressure gauge is crap!

Ok, let's assume fuel pressure is good, gauge is bad.

Spark.
I have an in line spark tester.
I plugged it in at the dist cap using the coil wire.

Frequently happy sparks!

OK .......

Temp II sensor is new and sadly right now warm.

I tried unplugging it but no joy.

I found a forgotten ground wire hanging under the coil, this has got to be it!

Cleaned it, hooked it up...... no change.

Part of the poor running is a backfire.
Timing is right, I set it the other day. Distributor clamp is tight.

When it backfires a puff of smoke came out by the throttle body, more exactly the #1 intake boot.

The clamp wasn't on properly..... this HAS to be it!

Fixed it...... no joy!

What the heck?

I wasted a day on this thing and it still won't run!

Tomorrow when it is cold I'll ohm out the air and water temperature sensors before trying to start it and see what they say.

I'll check them at the sensor itself and also at the ECU plug.

To say that I am baffled is an understatement!

Maybe the ECU doesn't like being cold?
I may see if Steve will lend me his extra ECU to try before I spring $250 on a new one.

Color me frustrated!

Spark, Fuel and Compression. ...... it won't start and run.

I'm overlooking something.

Dave

you'll get this! after years of coaching others, this is how karma reminds the learned of humility. right there with ya.

you checked fuel pressure but since this hasn't ran in a while, check fuel SPRAY.

you checked timing but had a backfire event... check it again as the dist may have shifted.

but all this is for naught because you need to plug your AFM back in!!!!

actually, unless the engine rocked i know your AFM is plugged in. BUT the backfire may have whacked the AFM vane and broke it or something wierd. pull the black cover and see if things are moving properly.

The poor running was before any backfire took place.

The injectors were redone by Mr Injector. They've fired for but 2 days in a system with all new fuel line, a new fuel filter and a clean tank.

It was literally 12 hours of sitting....... Everything changed!

But can you see a spark at each plug gap? Just an idea Confused

I'll check it, I did only check spark into the cap.
I was really only checking the hall sender by checking for spark.

A tomorrow task after I ohm out the temperature senders cold.

I cannot imagine fuel delivery would vanish in 12 hours of sitting!
But, if the ECU is adversely affected by cold, it could happen.

Steve got his 90 running today, If I find no joy tomorrow I'll run mine dien and plug it into his unit. See if it works.

If it is bad, BusDepot is on the way home, I'll order one before I leave. Pick it up on the way home.

I have an LED test light, works like a Noid.
I have my remote starter switch hooked up and sitting on the air filter.

Another thanks to Kam!

I have a printed copy of the digifant manual but it was a crappy scan and not every page is complete.

Her version is spot on perfect and colorized!
I just printed it for tomorrow.

Your year FI harness should have a second single pin connector along the firewall while earlier had only 1 there.
(the 1 all had was for the hall rpm signal to the ICU)

The more interesting very late 2nd connector is for the Temp2 sensor.
If you can spot this connector it is a handy place for measuring the Temp2 reading.
Of course it is also an additional failure point between the sensor and the ECU so check and perhaps clean it in any case.

Sadly my 90 is early, only number 2623 produced and is wired exactly like the 89's were.
I had the five pin injection relay. It has been rewired to the four pin as Kam outlines the procedure.

No relaxing tonight, my mind is on high alert.

The last task I did yesterday was to clean up and label my fuse panel.

I changed a couple of fuses for the correct amperage where a higher or lower was carelessly installed.

I used the 89 wiring diagram for My Bentley only goes to 89. But my 90 unit is early and the fuel injection was wired as an 89.

The fuse had an empty fuse slot #5 but had a 15 amp fuse in slot #6.

The 89 diagram shows #6 as unused so I pulled the fuse.
Now I wonder........ did 1990 use fuse #6 and if so is this todays problem?

Anyone with a newer Bentley handy than can check fuse #6 for a 90?

Thanks!

Dave

This "smells" like gas to me, and I'm suspicious of fuel pressure.

Was the new pressure regulator, actually new or just a different one that once worked?

New, I was baffled so I clamped off the return hose to see if the pressure changed, It didn't, which is why I suspect my gauge.

Ha!
Thanks for the information!
Well that doesn't help me sleep tonight!

PO's do odd things.......

I may just slip a fuse in that slot tomorrow anyway.
