Does anyone know the VIN #, date, or any other details on the 2 Millionth Transporter produced?
I couldn't find any information online about it.
I believe it was a 1968 model as VW Split Bus production was over 1.9M so it would have been a somewhat early 1968 model
Here are a couple photos from the ceremony:
In another thread here

I found this comment:

Does anyone know the chassis number of the two millionth T2.
Just found out my 68 Westfalia was built on the same day (5th Feb 68 ) and curious as to how close to the 2 millionth it was. |
I wonder where he got that date from?
I did the math and the total 1950-1967 Split Bus production is: 1,960,542
Total is from this page on the site:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/productionfigures.php
2,000,000 - 1,960,542 = 39,458
So it would be 1968 Bay Window # 39458
(This could be approximate though)
I can't see how that would be 5 Feb 1968, even with some leeway.
The VIN charts shows that VIN # as being in 10/1967:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/chassisdating.php
The last Bus in 10/1968 is 218 042 257 _________________ How to Post Photos

are you going to become a bay owner?
my best guess would have been at or around august of 67. there was a thread here on early 68's with date stamps of '67 in the doors etc _________________

That would be this one: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=195366 , some really low numbers in late 67, did the VIN system roll over?, or was it reset to zero for the spiffy new model?, in that case the millionth would be ~400K later than the first bays off the line. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

1965 onward VW VIN numbers start over for each model year but the model/year prefix changes.
So there can be a Bus # 100,000 off the 1968 and the 1969 production line but they would be VIN #:
238 100 000
and
239 100 000 _________________ How to Post Photos

I found another thread where someone asked a somewhat similar question.
I added the information and some comments to the first post in this thread, under the photos, in case anyone has any further comments on that and my math / theories there. _________________ How to Post Photos

Here's a question that has been bouncing around inside my head for some time...
Are the serial numbers in the VIN sequential for all Type 2s? That is, can the prefix vary depending on whether it is a truck or a bus or a kombi, and the serial numbers just keep marching forward? Like this (a 1975 example)?
2352001234
2252001235
2652001236
2352001237
2252001238

Message returned from VW by a Samba member
Thanks for your inquiry which was forwarded to Volkswagen Corporate Archives.
According to what we could find out from our documents, the anniversary of the 2 millionth Volkswagen Transporter took place on February 5, 1968.
We hope that we were able to help.
Best regards and best wishes
