|

Hey folks I am new to TheSamba.com and loving all the information. I just purchased a 1967 Beetle and have a gas cap question. The gas cap on my '67 does not fit properly and I am struggling to find the proper cap. My assumption is I have a Brazilian tank that requires a non VW gas cap. Attached are some pics.
I look forward to your expert answers.
Thanks
Steve

Thanks for the "expert" information.. I had found the cap you recommended and I will just purchase it. Current cap is just too big. Can smell gas fumes and tank is in really good shape.
Thanks again |

Yeah, if the seal in the gas cap is worn or eroded from the fuel, or simply is designed poorly, it will have a very loose fit and will be difficult to get it started. I’ve had this happen to me on several dirt bikes. Either find a cap that will work or find a German or good reproduction tank and matching set. OR... you may be able to custom make a better fit seal. All will work, just depends on budget and what you desire in the long run. _________________ -'85 c10 5.3 LS, cam, heads, long tubes, x pipe, 3 inch spin tech's

Looks like the right cap for that filler neck? Looks like it’s fairly new as well.
I just replaced the tank in my 67 and I had purchased a brand new rubber seal for my stock cap. I found out that the rubber seal didn’t actually seal very well. I had a roll of cork sheet and cut a new gasket using the rubber one as a template. Sealed like it should with the cork. Smelled fumes and ruined my new tank paint job with the rubber.
Might want to try some cork? It’s easy to find on the shelf, I think I bought mine from Tractor Supply. _________________ 67 Type 1

Agree .. if the cap actually fits.... create a cork gasket from bulk gasket material. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

Reviving an old thread.
What are you gluing the cork to the underside of the cap with?
My gas cap seal is deteriorating and needs to be replaced.
Thanks much.

No glue. The cork should hold itself if cut to fit. _________________ 67 Type 1
