I recently installed my new "spare" Bosch fuel pump for I thought mine had failed.

Turns out, it is perfectly good!

So, I'll be storing this used Bosch fuel pump as my emergency spare.

I have another low mileage fuel pump that has sat with fuel in it for Oh...... maybe 15 years or so. Yes, the fuel was still liquid! He has looped the hose with the filter end to end.

It is throughly locked up and is trash. I've tried to free it.

So, knowing that used pumps stored for an extended time seize up.

What should I run through this pump to preserve it?

Kerosene or diesel fuel. ATF would work too. Then bag it. Sometimes you can jump start a seized fuel pump with 24 volts. I'd not recommend doing that on the vehicle.

there's a filter screen and check valves in the pump so after pouring some ATF in, give a couple shots of 12v until the red stuff gooshes out. have the muzzle pointing in a safe direction of course.

since the locked up pump is trash anyway, soak it submerged for a week or two in Coleman fuel in a metal or glass container. essentially inexpensive naptha, the magic ingredient in Sea Foam. or maybe use Xylene.

What if I wire it backwards and run the atf through it thus flushing out the intake screen?

Or is there a check valve preventing such a thing?

there is a check valve. that's what holds your fuel pressure up in the rails when the engine is stopped.

but rocking backwards and forwards can help try to free the armature. this design runs the armature in gasoline for lubrication and cooling. let's say it holds a cup total, it's probably not that much. if you evaporate a cup of gasoline, the amount of schmoo left isn't that much. i bet it might free up with a long solvent soak. nothing to lose.

This worked for me one time on a Type 3 (late FI squareback) fuel pump. I hung the pump using some wire, and barely submerged it in a small pot of diesel with jumper leads and just switched polarity back and forth on it a few times. It eventually expelled a bunch of gunk, then worked normally for several months (before I ultimately tore the ICE engine out and replaced with an EV drivetrain).

I think I was 19 at the time. Looking back, that seems extremely dangerous for a number of reasons, and I would not do it that way again.

I cleaned up the dirty and undercoated fuel pump.

I poured some ATF in the 1/2” port and let it sit.

I wired it up to my remote start switch and ran it.

A whole lot of gas came spurting out!

I filled it with ATF twice more until only ATF came out.

Put on some port plugs, slipped it into a baggie with some spade terminals and into the box it went!
Ready for a road trip!

Hey Dave:

Why store that pump when it can be used as an air compressor? Wink

Bad idea, the fuel cools and lubricates the internal parts. Rolling Eyes

Glenn, it was a joke. Need to read Dave’s other thread why he now owns a spare
fuel pump. Wink

I had a spare NEW fuel pump......
Now?
I have a spare USED fuel pump.

Live and learn, who knew a Bosch pump can compress air to 26 psi?
Not me for sure!

At least I can cash in on the warranty if this new Bosch pukesl
My last new Bosch made it from Jersey to Southern Idaho where it died over night!

A friend from Boise picked one up and brought it to me, we were headed to her house anyway.....
Now? I carry a spare pump with me.
This assures that it will never happen again!
