How car is wired
Battery + to starter and ground at body. (at starter location)
Alternator B+ to battery +
Alternator D+ to a bulb then to Coil +
Ignition Switch is 4 pole :
1) Batt
2) IGN
3) Acc
4) GRND (center set)
There are no fuses.
Battery,Lights,Horn, & wipers connected to #1
Blinkers etc #3
#2 to Coil +
#4 to starter ground
Distributor to Coil -
So after pulling Alt etc to reshim fan, it wouldn't start.
Noticed smoke. After investigating the battery to ign switch line #1 and the IGN to coil line #2 were melting.
This is with Key ON.
Output #2 is 5 plus volts at key on.
Used remote starter to test starter. Turns engine over just fine (no start)
I then by passed the following lines as I assumed a short
#1 , #2, and 4
Ran temp lines to test
Same result.
So I'm stuck scratching my head. |

Several thing bother me in your description.....
THE melting wires indicates to me you have a short to ground on line going from IGN switch to coil +...
One side of ALT lamp should not go back to coil, it should be to IGN terminal of switch...
The terminal you designate as GRND on ignition switch does not ring true, it should be START, but would like to see pic of back of IGN switch.... If ignition switch is a universal ignition switch I seriously doubt its a ground connection.... Generally it should be a "START" to supply 12volt to terminal 50 on starter solenoid when key is turned over to start.......
THE diagram below should cover most of the wiring woes you have....
NOTE: Wire ignition switch by designation of terminals on switch not by position in diagram... Many different "Universal" switches out there and not all have terminals in same location...
Also suggest you put head lights and running lights, wipers, horn and such on a fuse block... Get something as simple as this at local auto parts...

As Dale suggested I see absolutely NO reason why you should have a ground on your ignition switch.
When you turned the key to "start" you connected terminal 1 & 2 which were positive to the ground. Thats what melted your wires |
