Have had this in the garage for decades. Not sure what it came from. Looking on flea-bay some folks seem to be selling almost identical ones that apparently are made of pure gold.
Anyway, before I list it for sale somewhere I'd like to know what it is as to not falsely advertise. Is it OEM? Is it aftermarket/reproduction?
I've recently restored 3 motorcycles and have been frustrated at how difficult some parts are to find. No sense hanging on to this bit if it helps somebody get closer to finishing theirs. Not interested in ripping anybody off.
Thanks! |

I have a very similar white one I recently removed from a 40’s teardrop trailer (although I’m fairly positive it’s not original). My guess is it might be some sort of aftermarket / universal accessory. They are cool, but I didn’t want to encourage anyone to smoke in there, so I pulled it out and now it just sits. |

Holy crap! 250 Euros for an ashtray? As if smoking alone wasn’t expensive enough. Another $500 just for a spot to butt them out.
Maybe I’m way off base and it is some sort of VW accessory. Not genuine VW since it should have a VW logo and part number I would think. But the odds of me finding that in a Ford-based 40’s trailer would be crazy.
I genuinely hope that ashtray I’ve had sitting on my toolbox for the past year (trying to figure out what to do with it) is worth that kind of cash! |

My thoughts as well, but none of the others I've seen being advertised as legit VW split window era ashtrays have markings on them either.

I don't want to bin this one if it's valuable to somebody else, but I also don't want to list it for a couple-hundo bucks and be "that guy" if it's a reproduction. |

As far as I know, Real split ashtrays are made of bakelite. |

These so-called ball ashtrays were offered as accessories by various dealers such as GHE or Perohaus. They were used in a wide variety of vehicles and models of all brands. |
