I scored this super original 1967 Beetle from a friend that found it at an estate sale. It was originally sold in New York, then made it’s way to South Dakota. It definitely wasn’t driven in the snow because there is 0 rust, and it has never been in an accident. It’s been repainted on the outside only, and it’s not bad at all. It’s all numbers matching, and from what I can tell, it has 113,000 original miles. The service booklet only covers up to 80,000 miles, the speedometer shows 13,000 and change, and the tamper proof seal is still on the speedometer where the cable attaches. The carpet on the heater channels and kick panel carpet was replaced, but everything else interior wise is original. I’m just going to replace the old seals, paint the bumper brackets the correct silver, do some detailing, then drive it!

Wow!!! That’s amazing. I noticed a self drilling sheet metal screw just laying back there by your speedometer cable... make sure you get that outta there so it doesn’t cause any wiring shorts... not likely but ya never know. That is a really sweet car.

That screw looks like a speedometer mounting screw. Did one of yours fall out or has an extra one been laying there since '67?

Wow - I'm salivating!!

I've never seen a tamper seal on a speedometer - but it makes perfect sense.

Amazing find.

I’ve owned numerous cars with that seal. Earlier cars actually had a translucent red seal. It was their way of making sure nobody tampered with the mileage I’m assuming.

Do you know what it's made of and if it's stamped with anything? I thought I might try my hand at reproducing it. I seem to learn at least one thing a day on this group!

It’s just like a thick paint like they used at junkyards for marking parts or prices on parts back in the day.

I see that the rear storage area carpet isn't rolled over and tucked into the groove below the window. Instead, it just sits flat with the edge binding visible. The original carpet in my '63 was tucked in, as was the OEM carpet in the '63 survivor from the gallery pictured below. I know it's just a small detail, but does anyone know when VW started installing that storage area carpet differently? I see carpet kits being installed both ways on newer & older cars alike.

As far as I know, this was the first year to do that. The 66’s I’ve owned had the carpet tucked in, so this has to be the first year.

Harry, Melt a red crayon across the speedo cable cap to the threaded end of speedo.......................DONE! The factory used a very heavy, tinted wax, one that actually flowed into the threads.

Wouldn't that melt on a hot day?
