https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2021-03-1...hree-years

"The California Coastal Commission has ordered an end to off-road driving at Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area within three years as part of an effort to restore eight miles of fragile coastline to a more natural state."

The wording is ambiguous. "Off-road" vehicles are to be banned. But what about "on-road" vehicles like our VWs at the Type 3 Rally a few years ago?

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

This is crap. Due to COVID, the area was "temporarily" closed, so nature moved in. Now they are using this RECENT incursion to the area to ban vehicles permanently and take advantage of the pandemic.

Cheap, dishonest, unfair.

Where do I send money to fight this cheating?

Driving is a privilege , not a right. The state has jurisdiction on what areas are open to various types of traffic, from foot paths to super-highways ( and eminent domain power ). About 1/2 the off road mileage in Colorado has disappeared over the last 30 years. Take a virtual tour and enjoy that in the years to come. Sad times.

Apparently it is officially coming. There has been a 3 year plan legislated to outlaw driving on the dunes. Now come the lawsuits, so we will see where this leads...

I think nature was always there....the humans and their cars were the incursion.

"Here first" isn't the end-all of morality.
Abandon Los Angeles and give it back to Spain?
Should all Europeans leave the American continents?
Should the human race commit ritual suicide to leave the planet back the way it was?
Where do you draw the line?

A few facts about this area...

The original off-road vehicle recreation area was 15,000 acres in the '70s.
This has already been decreased 90% to about 1500 acres. And 400 of that is removed during breeding season.
But that isn't enough reduction for some; they want it all.

That part of the California coast from Santa Barbara north is well known for natural soil/tar seeps. But if it comes from a vehicle, that somehow magically becomes toxic and unnatural.

Well said! The exact same thing is happening here on the East Coast. Cape Hatteras, Buxton, Salvo..................Wherever will the New Englanders come to complain. Usually, here, it is those outside of the area that visit, like it, then do what they can, to remove all vestiges of what they like about the place. Because of turtle breeding and plover breeding, they close off miles of the beach, then reopen it with miles still closed, to never reopen fully again. The driving crowd, what originally made this place what it is, is gone. Many who have invested time and money in the Outer Banks, will loose. This is just the fact. We live in a society that respects the rights of plovers but not those of the public. And those of us locally respected the rights of the wildlife. Those who were from other places did not! Instead of fining the population that was causing the problems........and this was easy to do...........now nobody can use the beaches. The plovers and the turtles were used to promote an AGENDA.

George Carlin has a unique view on the subject. I don't agree with it all, but it DOES make you think:

Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area closing to cars & ORV has nothing to do with saving the planet.
Residents in the area, and developers want to develop this area.
Look at the map, Strand Way will be the start,
and it will not end until there are beach front houses all the way to Guadalupe.
All those RV Parks & Quiet Trailer Parks for Seniors will all be turned into Condos.
The Beaches will be like the rest of California Beach Front, Open to the Public, but 99% Impossible to get to.
