Dave I did a similar project with a temp gauge and with a similar temp probe. Just not a fancy as yours.. It takes 2 little watch batteries that have lasted over 2.5 years.

I installed the little unit in the top steering column cover that I believe was the switch location for a heated seat. With a little work with the Dremel tool it slid right in there. Was able to slide the probe further over than the head light bucket and zip tied it to the blinker wire.
As far as accuracy in this location, it has been really good and is only effected by migrating heat from the radiator when at a stop light longer then a minute or two.

This is the only picture I could find of it. (Currently too lazy to walk out to the shop) -12 in Jackson Hole early last December.

Dave,
You got me thinking "why didn't I think of that....." and had to go out to the camper just to see where REALLY is the sensor tip located. Why didn't I complain about the headlight contributing too much heat......
OMG! down behind the front bumper, driver's side.
Now I can sleep tonight

but i MOSTLY like a thermometer to see the temp differences as one is driving... low spots, high passes, going thru towns. "LOOK! It dropped TWO degrees right here!" ayup, it is truly exciting conversation in our travels. |
Hmmm, we have the same conversations. This is also why I like the unit I posted that records highs and lows for three days "It got down to 20 F last night! Aren't we hearty people (and thank goodness for the Propex and blankets)." _________________ - Jim

Amazon accepts returns...
A Vanagon vendor offers an attractive indoor/outdoor thermometer that fits and is extending an April Fools day discount to us (the AAA battery in mine seems to last forever)...

Wireless sensor and place it behind the front turn signal lens.
No place is perfect but that's the best I've found. |

The Blue Sea unit requires a hole 1-1/8" diameter. Where would you install it? _________________ '90 Westy / automatic.
