One of the two downward facing studs that holds the front transmission mount to the chassis broke in half while I was trying to remove the nut. (78 vert) There is about a half inch sticking out. Is the stud threaded in so I can replace it, or is it welded on? How can this be fixed?
Appreciate any advice. Thank you.

Did I not see this question elsewhere?

Yes Mr. Cusser, I asked this question on an old thread, but got no answer.
Can anyone answer the question regarding the broken stud on the front transmission mount? Is the stud threaded or welded to the chassis? How can I replace it?
Thanks for any advice.

Sorry, I have no hands-on experience with this item.

If threaded in, heating it and grabbing with a Vise-grips or double-nutting might help.

If welded in, maybe tow it to a muffler shop and get a new stud welded in.

Fast way is too look at the back of the stud. My best guess is that they are welded in. Some studs on modern cars are like a lug stud with a spline that is pressed in but I don't think they are fancy like that.

If it is welded in, you might be able to cut it down flush, run a tap through what's left and put a bolt through it. I have run a cross parts of a classic vw that are very hard ,like their captive nuts that a cheap tap would not cut. So be aware of that.

The studs protrude from an enclosed section, so I can't see the back to determine if they are threaded or welded on. There are no obvious welds that I can see on the downward facing studs as they protrude from the chassis.
I am hoping that someone who has repaired this before can advise. I can't be the only one who has had this happen.
Thanks for your help.

You should be able to see the tops of the studs by removing the cover plate to access the shift coupler. Pretty sure they are spot welded. May have to drill out the broken stud, insert a like threaded bolt down through from the top, and spot weld the bolt head to keep it in place.

Fixed this by doing what was suggested, welded a new stud onto the broken piece.
Since this had to be done under the bug, it took some injenuity. After cleaning the area to bare metal and cutting the broken stud at about 1/4 inch from flush, my friend stacked bricks under the broken stud, just a bit higher than the new stud was long. We then lifted the rear bumper until he was able to insert the new stud inline with the old stud. Letting down the rear bumper trapped the new stud below the old stud and the weight of the body held it in place. Then he tack welded the new stud in place. We then jacked up the bug, put it on jackstands, and finished welding, grinding, etc.
Hope this helps someone contemplating this daunting process.

Can you tell me the thread on those studs please?

I seem to have misplaced the nuts.

I also can't find any documentation on what washers to use.

Found them. I think they are 12m-1.5.
I used a wave washer and a flat washer
