My new to me 1990 2.1 Automatic is running well.

I'm now chasing noises and other oddities.

I've been draining out slightly burnt ATF by multiple oil changes and now have a case full of clean oily smelling ATF rather than brown putrid stuff,
I'm trying to assess damage, slipping etc.

Those of you running Automatic transmissions with the WBX engines, I wonder what your real world rpm / speed relationships are?

On a flat road, just maintaining a steady RPM I find that my unit is
Turning at 3000 rpm and I'm cruising at 50 mph +/-

On a flat interstate doing 4000 rpm I'm traveling at 65 mph +/-

Kam has a page on her site that lists rpm and speed relationships.
I'm guessing this is ideal condition new units. I wonder how age and wear affect these numbers.

really don't have a good answer other than do you trust your tire size and tach.

Tires are brand new Yokohama 185R14 with a diameter of 25.7”

The tach?
Good point. I have a tune up tach, I'll hook that up and see if they agree...... though of course that's in Pennsylvania and I'm in Jersey! Laughing

I do have a scangauge here....... but that's of zero use.

IIRC the stall speed of the torque converter is 2700 rpm so add a bit of movement to the vehicle and the engine is going to be running at 3000 rpm or higher most any time that the throttle is to the floor. The high stall speed is how you get a riding lawnmower engine to move a two ton brick.

Those speeds seem about right. It's been a while since I've been on a long trip with this car, but it seem to me 70 mph was about 4150 rpm. I would love a lock up torque converter.

My 1990 2.1 with automatic and 200,000 miles on the clock (trans rebuilt with 3rd owner back in 2008-ish), 15" tires with stock diameter (but slightly wider than stock):

3800 rpm = 68 mph

(Speed is via GPS.)

If you really wanted to be accurate:

You could double check the accuracy of your tach with a handheld unit. It comes with reflective tape, so just cut a square and stick it on the crank somewhere.

https://www.amazon.com/Neiko-20713A-Digital-Tachom...amp;sr=8-3

Have a friend hold 1000rpm, 2000rpm, 3000rpm, etc and see the % discrepancy.

Then, download a speed app on to your phone and have it run while you drive down the road and compare all your data.

I would estimate that I am getting the same relationship that you are. I did not notice any change when the torque converter was replaced along with the new transmission.
