PostPosted: Mon Apr 05, 2021 1:21 pm    Post subject: Leak at Rear CV -Transaxle connection Reply with quote

First a little sad history. In October 2019 the transaxle blew up on our 86 Syncro. We got towed into a town where we did not know any mechanics. We ended up having the transaxle re-built by Mr. Gas in Canon City, CO. Respected and experienced rebuild guy. We had the transaxle put back in by foreign car shop in town where the van had been towed after break down. Very bad experience with this shop on multiple levels.

While we were traveling they contacted us and said we need new rear axles and cv assemblies and they need them immediately and they had already ordered some. I was leery of what they ordered and said that we want the right parts and so had them overnighted from Go Westy. Now I have learned that the EMPI parts from Go Westy are not that desirable but that was what was put in. I also ordered the Rockford boot Kit. In the end I don't really know what they did. Far more to the story with these guys but I will leqve it at that.

Since the work was done we have only put 1K miles on the van. At 600 miles one of the rear axles became unbolted form the wheel. Another tow. It seems the hex type bolts had never been properly torqued.

Now - on the other side (passenger rear I am seeing this slight leak where the axle/cv connects to the transaxle. Photo is attached. If you look close it alos appears that there are wear/age cracks on the samll side of the boot and also signs of leakage around it. No way that boot only has 1K miles on it imo.

My question. Can transaxle fluid leak out from that point? Is there a seal that we should get replaced?

In a few days we are taking the van to a new shop that has been highly recommended from a very experienced and trusted source. They are putting on new rear shocks, new rear locker switch, power steering hose. I am going to show them this but thought to get some expert advice and opinions from you all first.

Thanks in advance!

That’s 1000 miles? The leak appears to be from transaxle the seal/race adjusting ring. That would likely be a claim with Mr Gas. There is a side cover O ring and seal. The cv flange is where the trans seal seals. A proficient tech should be able to fix it. Worse case the flange may need a speedi sleeve repair.

Have you been doing a LOT of dirt road driving?

That level of dirt for 1000 miles is astounding!

You have two leaks, CV grease and differential oil.

I see a new boot to axle clamp so I'm guessing that extreme layer of filth is your doing.

Thanks to you both. Yes just 1K miles since re-built transaxle and (supposedly) new axle/cv assemblies put in. It's a new cv boot clamp but look at the wear/age cracks on the small end of the boot by the clamp.

Yes we do drive on a lot of dirt roads.

Photos of passenger side inner cv area attached for a comparison. Again both sides supposedly had new axles/cv/boots put on 1K miles ago when rebuilt transaxle got put back in.

I could go on at length about the other problems with this foreign car repair shop, Alpine Autohaus in Grand Junction , CO but it is too painful to regurgitate how badly I feel we got ratf***ed.

Talking to new mechanic now about replacing all this "new" stuff with Lobro CV and Rockford boots. Hoping now to get it done asap cause plan is to head out into the canyon country wilderness with the van @ 4/12.

You guys here on the samba continue to amaze me with your expertise, good advise and positive spirits Thanks!!

Axle boots have proven themselves to be garbage.

There is a new boot alternative.

VW Tiquan Boots.

I am currently running GKN boots on one axle and Genuine VW boots on the other.
A test to see if one is better than the other.
Initial thoughts? I like the VW boots better.

Order from FCP, they have a lifetime warranty. Yes, even on axle boots.

Link to Tiquan boot thread......

If it weren’t fir the user I would call user error on this, but this guy knows his way around the shop.

Unbelievable new low in part quality

Hmm. That is interesting. I am thinking of having the Lobro Cv joints with Rockford Boots put on. I could sub the VW Tiquan boots. Too bad your test is still in it's early stages!

Is there a preferred axle I should be considering as well? IOW - The part that connects between the inner and outer cv'c?.

there is so much labor involved and I want to (and wanted to previously) use the best parts. Doesn't cost any more labor to put in better components. We don't do any extreme four wheeling but we get off the pavement quite often on high clearance roads. Dependability in remote travel is our primary concern

Tiquans are all over the place running OE VW boots.
I would NOT run any Vanagon boot available today.
I would, if pressed, say run VW's boot.
FCP has them.

OK. so you would not use these:
http://www.t3technique.com/drivetrain-parts/cv-joints,-boots,-etc/rockford-cv-boot.html.

Like I said we plan to put in the Lobro cv joints BUT we hope to get them overnighted and the T3:shop owner is on vacation till 4/9. Any other soirces for those anyone may know of?

Continuing thanks!

Edit>> maybe answered my own question re cv joints plus boots:

That kit won't solve your boot problems.

The VW boots are $43 each.

Lobro CVs are available from all the usual Vanagon vendors.

OK. I thought from the thread you linked to that you bought a set of the vag/vw boots and a set of the lobro and you were testing both?

I am.
But you need answers tonight.

My opinion tonight is don't waste money on any Vanagon boot, you already did once.
Buy a Tiquan boot.
IMHO I prefer the fit of the VAG boot over the GKN boot. Also the OE VW boot has millions of proven users on the road right now.

My boots are nearing the mileage of yours where yours died. Both brands look brand new still.

Dave - Thanks man. I was just a bit confused by the various GNK, Tiguan, VAG, Lobro, OE designations. I absolutely want to put on the best we can get and if I now understand correctly, these are the ones.

That link says inners. Are there different boots for the outers?

For the price of labor for this job, you could likely buy all the equipment necessary to do it yourself, forever. Just sayin'.

Yes and I think I could do the work although I am by no means a professional mechanic. BUT

I have a outside gravel parking space to work on it in.
I have a business and clients to take care of.
I have a GF relationship to keep on track
I have a house that requires maintenance
I like to do alot of other stuff like outdoor rec/exercise , piano, etc.

So... I will gladly pay a pro and esp if he is honest and conscientious.

You are using a boot for a different vehicle that someone discovered fits the Vanagon and solves a part quality supply problem.

The parts listing could say it fits on the roof, I don't care!
It is the part number that matters not the description.

This is a genuine VAG VW/Audi part.

You can get the exact boot at your VW dealer also ...... but no lifetime warranty.

Order four (4) ...... cry once.

New aftermarket rubber parts are crap nowadays. Sometimes OE too.
I don't know why.
