Mystery engine. I pulled it apart, cleaned everything. Replaced the rod and cam bearing without measuring simply because i had them. replaced the worn dished cam with a good used flat cam and maxi pump. new lifters. solid rockers shafts. Ive got 60 bucks invested so far. just need pistons and cylinders now.

I got the short block nearly finished today.

The less time, money, effort, and thought spent on an engine the longer it will last. That's a solid 250k mile motor right there.

That's not wrong!

Many years ago I bought a used engine for my Rabbit, went totally OCD on it doing everything possible to make it "right" with all the tricks, spent big bucks and had nothing but grief with oil pressure issues etc. Finally got it sorted out and running well.

Then I rebuilt the stock engine, just threw it together with new bearings, rings, valve guides and a gasket set, a $250 rebuild. No measuring, no machining,
no balancing - nothing! Stuffed it in an old rusty Audi Fox. That sucker was spot on from day one, even used less oil than it did when it was new and less that the big dollar rebuild!

Unfair question, because you haven’t told us if you will run moderately or trash on it at every opportunity?

cant tell if your joking or not(sorry)

A running 60 dollar engine is better than no engine. I dont have the time or funds to build a third engine lol.

Did you at least test for camshaft gear to crank drive gear backlash with the 2nd cam? Does the crank rotate easily and uniformly now that the case is together? Take out the oil pressure relief valve and spring to check that the plunger is not jammed? Flush through each case half's oil galleys with a water jet and/or solvent for getting at least some of the nested residue out of them? Chase your head studs and engine perimeter studs with the appropriate dies so that you get accurate tightening torques? Each one of those tasks would take maybe 1/2 hr but would add a notch in confidence.

oops yeah i almost forgot to mention i did check camshaft thrust endplay. rotating assembly rotates fine although number 2 main journal has a tiny bit of surface rust. the only other thing im measuring is ring gap. other than that if the thing blows up or comes apart oh well.

the gear i replaced the old one w/ has the same backlash number so it should be fine.

Update. The short block minus pistons and cylinders is completely done and torqued to spec.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I no joke found an SKP 85.5mm piston cylinder set for 104 bucks plus 10 bucks shipping on parts geek.

I ordered it 2 days ago so I'm guessing it will be here sometime next week.

Btw is this the correct dizzy?

Engine code is and AE459777

Bosch dizzy code is 023 178 009

Thanks

i was seriously joking. heh heh!
but seriously, thats just the way life goes. its like this, ive been painting cars for over 30 yrs and i realized years ago that the harder i tried to make a perfect paint job the more problems i had. BUT if the car was a turd and i put minimal effort into it , that would be the most flawless job i could ask for.

so i say the less effort you put into this engine assuming it'll barely last past break in, that itll probably never die

I like your style!

I don't think an 009 is correct for anything, or at least not factory original.

I dug out one of my fan shrouds I painted nearly 2 years ago. I used to pretty Laughing since then its gained some scrapes but it will do.

I've got 13 days to get the chassis finished and this engine running.

Let's see if I can pull it off Shocked
