I think I have set of bolted end/solid rocker shafts with stock VW rockers.

I can look later today if you want them, adjusters are in decent shape

*edit - found them if you want them

Yep! Socks are just spark magnets.

Built my first big Jeep in flip flops, no socks, and an old stick welder cranked way up. Just gotta learn how to shake out the hot ones while keeping a bead going.

Nah. What's makes me stupid, is that what burnt me, was the filler rod I dropped on myself.

The nice thing about tig, is that the molten bits dont usually jump unless they have reason.

Also, I think I've found the toughest brocken exhaust stud in the universe. I'll post up on that later

It will last a long time before you have trouble. I always think when I first get on the highway, “is this the day?” I would just be sad to send a con rod through the original #s matching case on my VWs, but I know I have plenty of spare engines. As long as you listen to it, you will catch it before the con rod is out side the case. You know how many people have owned VWs and been clueless about them? And most didn’t get completely destroyed Laughing Worst case, you have a bonfire with the engine Anxious

Keep up the good work!

nah. whats scary is flooring a 300,000+ mile 55 dodge poly up a hill.

If you do that enough times, you drop a valve Wink

clueless is half the people on this site. not thats theres anything wrong with that... i think Shocked Smile

Today we gather around and mourn for those we lost.

4 1/8th drill bits, 3 left hand drill bits of various sizes, 2 EZ outs, and 8 original 13mm VW bolts lost their lives trying to save a cylinder head...

no but this exhaust stud is stupid stuck. ive tried welding them to the stud, putting the stud in a vice and rotating the head, vice grips, etc.

Oh and drills dont really "drill" into this material. especially when your trying to drill through stud and the end of an EZ out lol.

so i just decided to grind and then drill the hole out(ok that sounds funny) oversize and re tap it. I think it will work.

Basic question, but that bolt you welded was to extract the stud right?

How'd that go?

Do you plan to stick a case saver in there?

I've heard you can sometimes stick a very small peice of copper tubing, build up a bead inside the hole with a MIG, then weld a nut to top. Then, if your lucky, you can unscrew the broken off bolt or stud that is inset deep, even broken off as much as 1" below the surface AND without messing up the threads.

Nope, after drilling it oversize and oblong, I said eff it.

So I used a self tapping screw until I can find another head Laughing

The exhaust ports are rotted anyhow Laughing

I just need it to last break in.

Exhaust leaks never hurt no one. Sort of

Pistons and cylinders came in. I think I like AA better. They didnt oil them so theres a tiny bit of scuffing but I'm no worried about it

Will do! I have to take them apart to reshim them anyhow so I may as well.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I got the rings gapped( they were real close from factory but I went by the bently manual specs).

I had time to assemble one piston, lube it, and seal the cylinder.

Also, somehow the cylinders are AA brand. Idk about the pistons.

They must all come from the same factory.

Oh and those oil control retainer rings... are really flexible. I've never installed ones this flexible.

Glad you got the rocker set. Definitely clean out and re-shim. They are fairly clean, but have been sitting for awhile.
