My bug is a 74 and one of the guys wanted to know what type of foam was used in 1974 -- Basic description is like a hard toasted loaf of Italian bread.
Also as he said the later foam does not act like a sponge, it is hard and water resistant.
But if it rains it will act as a dam and prevent the area to drying.
My conclusion is seal the vent covers.
THis is what I came up with One side of the vent cover I used aluminum sealing tape as a base for the Black Silicone I put in to seal the entire inside of the vent cover.
The Vent covers are pushed and clip into place.
I am sealing the mounting area around of the vent cover with with a thin line of silicone, then push and clip it in place. No water will get in form the vent.
Tried removing the later year foam is very hard to remove. Besides the main wiring cable is in with the foam, easy to cut when hacking away in the foam. Not worth removing, keeping more water from getting in will help it from getting worse .
It don't look bad on the bug, well, you know (the eye of the beholder story)

That is only one source of water intrusion. Another is condensation on the inner side of the roof, which drips down and back and gets caught in the foam.
If you have moisture in a warmed car (breathing is enough), and park it with windows closed (the normal practice), that water has to condense SOMEwhere as it cools, and the rapidly cooling roof metal is the usual spot. |

when you say inner side of the roof do you mean under the headliner???
I figured there were other sources, I completely removed my headliner to prevent that but.......... I am sure you are correct and some must get thru. But with out headliner it can dry faster.
Actually my motive to get rid of the headliner were due to mouse turds and piss.
All we can do is limit it and slow it down.
