Heyyo! I’m super new and ready to learn! Today we all piled in the bus to go to the beach and here’s what happened:
Sat idling for a bit while everyone got their lives together
Put her in reverse but stalled
Tried to start and is just chugging and won’t turn over.
Ideas? Fixes?

Just to clarify.
It sounds like the starter is turning the engine over but the engine will not fire and run?

What does “turn over” mean? I’ve been a mechanic all my life but this phrase doesn’t describe anything.

Has the van ever not started or had any other running issues before this no start?

That process is the starter engaging the flywheel, the flywheel rotating the crankshaft, and then the crankshaft starting the engine. This is that cranking noise you hear when you turn the key – that fast-paced “ruh, ruh, ruh” noise.
So, "turning over" means "cranking" according to my understanding. "Turning over" does not mean "starting", although in order for the van to "start", it must "turn over".

No crank, no,start......silence
Crank, no start.....ruh ruh ruh but no smoke or change in engine crank speed
Crank, fire, no start....ruh ruh ruh Bam...ruh,,ruh,,ruh bam - bit of smoke but won’t catch and stay running
CrAnk fire catch stall.....often an immobiliser issue on modern cars
No crank , start...reserved for jump,box or push start scenarios

Ok. Here’s where I am with this. Hit (lightly-ish) the starter with a hammer and it kicks over SO I’m thinking a new starter is on the list of to do. Once we got her going found it’s SUPER sluggish like almost doesn’t want to go in first. Totally fine in all other gears.

Oh, and when driving in first it was not upset, like rpm’ing high, going 20 mph.
Random question not to go off subject but, does anyone remember the radio show Click and Clack?

Emily..your car needs new plugs cap and rotor once per year. You can do this your self in about an hour and $75 in parts.
A shop will charge you $332.50
You also need to look at your fuel lines and probably replace them, or your VanaBus will have a sad, fiery ending.

Actually brought my first car to them to do a look-see, I think in Somerville MA. Old Dodge Dart that I bought when I turned 16, for $150. Went to pick it up. They were adamant that it should not be driven due to a crack in the frame. Good times. |
