I have decided I want my single cab to have a radio and, therefore, speakers. I have ordered new door cards that already have speaker holes near the manual window crank. So, now what?
Searching speakers led me to 34 pages of threads, and most dealt with modifications -- getting 6x9's in there, denting grills, etc. Other threads had the speakers mounted in a lower position on the doors.
One choice is to find used stock speakers. I may go that route.
What about this choice? https://www.hifisoundconnection.com/Fits-Volkswage...EPLACE2344
The thing that spooks me out of the gate is it states 1908-85 Vanagon's. Was there something about 1986-91 models that were different in this regard?
I'm open to other suggestions. I'm not looking to be an audiophile's envy. I just want to be able to listen to some nice tunes on the radio, from a CD, etc. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

I just made a mount and mounted the speakers to the door and put a slim open mesh grill on the panel. That way you have no interference with the window crank or dash. You should put a protector on the back of the speaker as there is more water back under the vent glass then you would think.
Speaker used to come with Plastic shields put it is easy enough to fashion something up. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia Triple knob (bastard)

Don’t get stock speakers.
Like 16CVs said, you can mount them straight to the door. Fitting 6.5” is easy with a little bit of trimming to the speaker and a few new holes drilled in the door. I mounted 6.5”s in the upper location behind the stock speaker grilles. And used speaker baffles to protect against water, but cut the bottom out so the speakers can breathe.

With a 6.5 coaxial you might need to trim more of the grille, but most speakers should still fit.
Two 4” speakers in a sinka will leave a lot to be desired unless you just listen to talk radio.

Thanks to all who answered. I will check out the links later to see if there's anything there for me.
Except for a trip to Maine I have planned in a couple of weeks, most of my Sinka driving will be local. I'm more interested in keeping things stock (or stock looking) than having anything super impressive. I will be listening to 2-3 local stations, 10-15 SiriusXM stations, and some CDs. The head unit is only listed at 50 watts per channel. I do want to listen and occasionally get loud distortion-free, but not much more than that.
I will consider all options, however.

I simply ordered some 3 1/2” speakers and simple mesh wire speaker covers.
Just make sure that the speakers you order don't have a pronounced center cone.
They sit as flush as stock and don't require a fancy window crank handle.

So, you didn't like the Kicker DSC350 speakers? _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

What about these?
https://www.amazon.com/Rockford-Fosgate-T142-Coaxi...en+Vanagon
They seem to have a good range of sound and can easily handle what the head unit puts out. They have a mounting depth of 1.79" and Amazon says they fit a 1990 Vanagon.
They don't come with grills. Would a stock Vanagon grill work? _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

Do you think the above mentioned Kickers would fit an '85? _________________ "You're either on the bus, or you're off the bus." ~kk

Older model Westys had speakers with a "flange mount". They looked like this:
The housing was threaded and a retaining ring screwed on from the back to hold them in place. They did not have any mounting holes. Like others here, I purchased late model Westy speakers, cut the front off and mounted updated speakers behind the modified grill. They are attached with screws fastened through sheet metal clip nuts attached to the door cards. Sound quality is OK. It depends on your personal sound quality standards. _________________ 1988 Westfalia automatic Subaru OBD1

Ahh, '86 and '90 ... I didn't pick up on that the first read-through. Interestingly, the Kicker speakers according to Amazon doesn't fit a '90 Vanagon. Since you are using them and the mesh covers from the links you included without needing to modify the window crank, I'm not going to pay any attention to Amazon.

My other cars have varying quality system and speakers. If I wanted serious listening to my tunes, I probably wouldn't even have speakers in the doors of a single cab. My headliner would probably be totally custom with personalized speakers for each person.
Thanks again, everybody. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

Well, at the end of the day, virtually any new speaker will be far better than stock, but you still are very limited in sound from a 4" speaker. Just can't move enough air unfortunately. I have found those "boom mat" type speaker protectors really seem to improve the sound for cheap, as well as giving protection from water - for you folks that actually have water falling from the sky... _________________ '86 Westy FAS GenV Turbo (Marvin) |

Yeah, but options for speakers in a single cab versus a Vanagon are very limited unless I want to start down the road of major customizing. Even then, the speakers are going to be either is some stupid place or right on me. And then, I won't be piping in the volume unless I want to lose what hearing I have left.
I did make note of the boom mat mentioned earlier. Seems like a smart addition. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

I’ve spent a lot of time pondering speakers for my single cab. Finally decided on 4” speakers in the factory location. I’m going with Focal PC100s. https://www.focal.com/sites/www.focal.fr/files/shared/catalog/document/pc100-technical-sheet.pdf
I hope to install them this weekend. Not sure how I’m going to do it yet but I’ll report back on how it goes and how they sound.

Nice. Good luck with the install! Focals are really well built and the magnet on those is huge for a 4”. I’m sure they’ll sound great with a little bit of power behind them. |

Overall depth is 66.4mm which is just over 2.6 inches. I'd be worried it would interfere with the window crank. Hope to see a report soon. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

As someone else mentioned, the space between the door card and the dash is very small. If you still have the original speakers, you can place the new speaker behind the card and then cut the back of the old speakers and mount them on the door card. Looks stock and won't hit the dash. This assumes that the speaker fits that way.
